A brand-new release has brought Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor‘s Nemesis System to Red Dead Redemption 2. On the surface, RDR2 seems like it could use a feature like this, and it’s excellent in practice, too.
The Nemesis System was invented for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor in 2014. The feature let every enemy in the game rise through the ranks of opposing factions, making them more powerful and notable to the player. It turned what would otherwise be forgettable NPCs into a core part of the gameplay loop. Warner Bros. patented the Nemesis System, meaning it could not be implemented in other games in the years to come, except for Shadow of War, the sequel to Shadow of Mordor.
Red Dead Redemption 2 enRage Mod Adds Nemesis System
Now, thanks to a new mod named enRage on Nexus Mods by user nicklovin99, the Nemesis System has arrived in Red Dead Redemption 2. It gives every NPC “a name, a temper and a mind shaped by a life lived before you rode in.” NPCs now remember player actions, and players now develop a reputation over time as a result. If players rob a man, he may not forget and hunt the player further down the line. When a character is greeted and the player learns their name, they are now a permanent character in the world, playing their role in the Nemesis System.

To flesh out this new Red Dead Redemption 2 mod, the creator has marked eight base-game factions. Each one has its own leader, and three tiers of officers and men below them. They have their own goals and will act to shape the world accordingly. Like the Nemesis System, players can hunt these individuals down, and when defeated, someone else will take their place. Importantly, the mod doesn’t disrupt the game’s story and stays out of the way during missions. It’s an extensive overhaul of the gameplay loop, but one that actually enhances the RDR2 experience.
Red Dead Redemption 2: enRage – Living World and Nemesis System Key Features
- Eight new factions, each with their own leaders and officer tiers
- Players can hunt down NPCs in each faction, affecting reputation
- Every NPC has tempers, traits, quirks, a life story, and needs
- Players make enemies and nemeses through actions
- A nemesis will hunt down players later on
- Wars can break out between factions who share the same goals
The creator has been upfront that Claude Code aided in the creation of the scripts for the Red Dead Redemption 2 Nemesis System mod, which may turn some players away. The use of AI in modding is becoming more prominent, for better or for worse, especially in recent months. Transplanting one game’s features into another has become a common approach, resulting in some wild crossovers that don’t always make sense. But in this instance, it’s fair to say that the Nemesis System feels right at home in Red Dead Redemption 2.
With Grand Theft Auto 6 just around the corner, it’s inevitable that fans will start to hope for a possible Red Dead Redemption 3 in the next few years. Rockstar has never officially commented on a sequel, but given that RDR2 is one of the best-selling video games of all time, it feels like a matter of when, not if. But with the focus on GTA 6, fans should not expect to see it any time soon.
