Mass Effect 5 may never see the light of day following BioWare’s closure, but fans are finally getting a better idea of what the developer had planned. A previously unreleased trailer for the canceled RPG leaked online, revealing that the project was apparently titled Mass Effect: Universe. The footage introduced a new protagonist, showed off some impressive cinematic action, and confirmed the return of Liara T’Soni once more. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier subsequently verified the trailer’s authenticity, making it the clearest look yet at the game BioWare had spent years developing.
The leaked Mass Effect 5 trailer was particularly painful for fans because it arrived just one day after EA announced BioWare’s closure and the game’s cancellation. Although the footage was created using preproduction assets, it suggested that BioWare was pursuing a different approach to the franchise, with espionage, political intrigue, and a new protagonist taking center stage. Now, more information has surfaced online (and some of it sounds considerably different from the original Mass Effect trilogy).
Mass Effect Universe Was Set During a Galactic Cold War
Content creator Dantics, who claims to have served on a BioWare community council for Mass Effect 5, has shared numerous alleged details about the canceled Mass Effect: Universe. According to Dantics, the game was set more than 600 years after the Reaper War and would have featured a customizable N7 agent rather than Commander Shepard. The protagonist was reportedly envisioned as a combination of John Wick and James Bond, emphasizing espionage, precision, and specialized technology instead of carrying an enormous collection of weapons. Dantics also claims that Shepard’s legacy would have been preserved regardless of which ending players chose in Mass Effect 3, potentially avoiding the need to establish one definitive conclusion to the original trilogy.
BioWare has a history of using Community Councils in game development, adding weight to Dantics’ claim.
The alleged story would have taken place during a Galactic Cold War, with three major factions competing for power. Humanity, the Krogan, Batarians, and other species reportedly formed one alliance, while the traditional Council races established another. Mass Effect‘s Geth, meanwhile, emerged as a third superpower, complete with enormous megastructures demonstrating their technological capabilities. The Geth had previously been teased, so their survival should not come as a complete surprise (many fans even speculated on how they could survive).
Instead of introducing another Reaper-style invasion, Mass Effect 5 would have focused on political tensions, a mysterious adversary operating behind the scenes, and connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda. BioWare was not going to leave Mass Effect: Andromeda and the Ryders behind, while Liara was also reportedly returning as an incredibly powerful Asari Matriarch, both developments consistent with a time jump.
Dantics claims the Mass Effect 5 protagonist would have experimental technology implanted in their body, allowing players to see through walls, identify electronic systems, hack equipment, and remotely trigger environmental hazards. Missions were supposedly handcrafted like those in the original trilogy, but players would have enjoyed considerably more freedom in completing objectives, similar to the Hitman franchise. Brutal close-range executions were also planned, reinforcing the idea of a highly trained operative who could eliminate threats through combat, stealth, or manipulation. The proposed approach would have represented a major departure from the squad-based shooting that defined previous Mass Effect games.
Despite those changes, Mass Effect 5 reportedly wasn’t abandoning the character relationships that made BioWare famous. Dantics claims squad mates could clash with one another, while romantic relationships weren’t being toned down or sanitized. However, these details remain unverified claims from Dantics, whose alleged community council involvement does not independently establish that every feature had been approved or would have survived development. With BioWare now closed and Mass Effect: Universe canceled, there’s no guarantee that the series will ever revisit these ideas.
