The truth is that Nintendo has never been particularly shy when it comes to celebrating its most recognizable franchises, and many fans are more than happy about it. People love having a reason to celebrate, and it is even more welcome when there are no new releases on the horizon. However, while franchises like Super Mario or Pokemon have enjoyed their own celebrations for years now, many other titles like Pikmin have not had the same opportunity. At least until Nintendo finally decided to change that.
Nintendo celebrated its first-ever Pikmin Day on November 1, 2026, with Shigeru Miyamoto announcing that the date would become an annual celebration of the franchise. The studio also revealed that players can expect some brand-new content for Pikmin 4, Pikmin Blood, and the animated series Hello! Pikmin. Of course, this is all very exciting, especially for longtime fans, but what is more interesting is what these announcements could mean in the long run. It seems like Nintendo is determined to give Pikmin a more permanent place in its plans, and the first Pikmin Day has the potential to become a much bigger milestone than it initially seems.
Nintendo Is Giving Pikmin More Attention Than Ever Before
The fact that Nintendo is not treating Pikmin Day like a one-time celebration is definitely interesting, as the studio has established an annual event dedicated to the franchise. This is something that Pikmin has never had before. In any case, Miyamoto explained that November 1 was chosen because the three original types of Pikmin represent three ones, which is actually a pretty smart way to give the celebration a date. Of course, Pikmin is not the first franchise that gets this special treatment, as Pokemon has the so-called Pokemon Day and Super Mario gets the MAR10 Day.
Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero.
However, looking at the pattern, Nintendo tends to dedicate special celebrations only to franchises that are a big deal already or will receive even more attention from the developers in the future, so it seems like Pikmin is entering this list as well. Sure, this doesn’t mean that it will become as popular as Nintendo’s biggest hits, but the new Pikmin holiday could give the studio another opportunity to keep the title relevant throughout the years. Perhaps the biggest surprise on the first Pikmin Day was the announcement of the animated shorts titled Hello! Pikmin, developed in partnership with Nintendo Pictures. The studio announced that the plan is to release one episode per month starting in December 2026. This is quite an unusual decision, considering that the game has never been associated with animated entertainment previously, but it’s actually a sign that the studio is exploring what the Pikmin characters could offer beyond the adventures we have seen them in so far.
It is certainly too early to say, but maybe Pikmin has a way more interesting future ahead of itself than most people might expect.
Nintendo has also introduced Fuka Kosiba, an actress who will promote the franchise. Now, many people who have never even heard of Pikmin will have the opportunity to get more familiar with all the colorful little creatures, especially after seeing them in the animated shorts. In other words, Nintendo seems to be creating more and more opportunities for the Pikmin franchise to grow. Moreover, Nintendo appears to be creating a strong connection between the two games as well because completing exams in Dandori Academy unlocks special maps in Pikmin Bloom. This means that players will have an incentive to engage with both titles.
Furthermore, Pikmin Day was not limited to digital announcements either, as the studio organized a celebration at Nintendo NEW YORK where visitors could enjoy a themed photo opportunity, gain access to special posters, and even purchase Pikmin merch. Pikmin Bloom fans had even more reasons to visit the event since Nintendo announced a special challenge connected to the location that would start on November 12, 2026, and continue until November 25, 2026. Overall, the event is nowhere near as big as the ones for some of the other Nintendo franchises, but it is still a great way to promote Pikmin and bring it into the real world.
Pikmin Day Might Be Just the Beginning of Nintendo’s Bigger Plans
It’s worth mentioning that none of this means that Nintendo will now suddenly start making huge Pikmin announcements. However, since the franchise is getting so much attention, it’s only natural for people to start wondering whether the studio has something bigger planned for the future. Moreover, this celebration also includes special activities, which is usually a sign that the devs are ready to develop the franchise without depending entirely on new game releases.
It is certainly too early to say, but maybe Pikmin has a way more interesting future ahead of itself than most people might expect. Who knows, perhaps Nintendo could eventually turn Pikmin Day into an opportunity for players to bond through bigger community challenges and earn special in-game rewards. In any case, events like these tend to be just the beginning of much bigger plans.
