Valheim Player Visits Mountains and Instantly Regrets It

One unlucky Valheim player had the misfortune of getting hit with a wolf raid within seconds of stepping foot in the Mountain. They have thus experienced one of the worst possible introductions to this already harsh Valheim biome.

Valheim features a variety of enemy events in which mobs attack the player in large numbers. Fans commonly refer to these events as “raids,” as most are triggered when the player is near three or more base structures, causing the spawned creatures to effectively raid their base. The wolf raid is the sole exception, as it can begin anywhere once it is added to the raid rotation. This occurs after defeating Valheim‘s Bonemass boss and visiting either the Plains or, more commonly, the Mountains.

Unlucky Valheim Player Gets Hunted Within Seconds of Visiting the Mountains

Due to its requirements, the wolf raid typically doesn’t trigger until the player has spent some time exploring the Mountains. However, Reddit user Millelys recently experienced some unusually bad luck, encountering the challenging event less than a minute after first entering Valheim‘s Mountain biome. The incident was preceded by a lone wolf attack at the foot of the mountain, which resulted in a drawn-out fight, as is often the case when using Swamp-tier (or lower) gear against Mountain enemies. After narrowly surviving, Millelys was met with the ominous “You are being hunted” message, followed by four more ferocious wolves charging them, making them regret ever embarking on their mountain adventure.

The resulting wolf pack overwhelmed the player within seconds, making for a particularly harsh introduction to the biome. The situation could have been worse if Millelys hadn’t started retreating upon spotting the pack; as a result, they were killed near the mountain’s base rather than higher up. This likely made the subsequent corpse run far more manageable. The video of their unfortunate first trip to the Mountain amassed over 1,700 upvotes and surfaced on the front page of the game’s largest subreddit within hours of being posted in mid-January 2026. It also sparked over 300 comments, with many Valheim players agreeing that encountering the wolf raid within seconds of visiting the Mountain constitutes some exceedingly bad luck.

Millelys also made the encounter more difficult by not using the best Valheim food combinations available to them before entering the Mountains. As shown in the opening moments of their video—where their inventory is visible—they had already defeated Bonemass prior to exploring the Mountain biome. Having spent considerable time in the Swamp, they had access to significantly better food than the beginner-level options they were using, which raised their HP to just over 100. Still, even with triple that amount of health, reliably surviving a wolf raid typically requires far better gear than what they had equipped.

How To Deal With Valheim’s Wolf Raid

Broadly speaking, the top priority when facing Valheim’s wolf raids is avoiding being surrounded and limiting angles of attack, as wolves strike rapidly and can overwhelm even well-equipped players. The Bonemass Forsaken ability is particularly effective in these situations, boosting resistance to all physical damage and making blocking easier. It lasts for 300 seconds, i.e., more than twice the duration of a typical wolf raid.

Once stamina management is sorted, the most effective way to clear a wolf pack is to use area-of-effect attacks, like the Atgeir spin, Stagbreaker slam, or even Ooze bombs. Because the wolf AI tends to charge directly at the player, it’s sometimes possible to retreat to inaccessible locations and use ranged attacks to thin their numbers. However, this is unreliable, and players are generally better off learning to fight the pack in melee. With experience, wolf raids become a quick and easy source of meat and pelts, to the point seasoned players may even look forward to them.
