January 20 is Going to Be a Bittersweet Day for PS Plus Subscribers

PlayStation Plus subscribers signed up for the Extra and Premium tiers of the service have a very busy day ahead of them. Tuesday, January 20 will be when the next big PlayStation Plus update drops, with nine new games coming to the service as four other titles make their departure.

PlayStation Plus’ Extra and Premium tiers work much differently than the Essential tier. Games added to the PS Plus Essential tier are effectively “free” games that subscribers can retain access to indefinitely as long as they are signed up for the service. In contrast, games in the Extra and Premium tier are rotated in and out of availability, ala Xbox Game Pass. There’s typically one big update to the PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers every month, and this month it lands on January 20.

Free Download Means You Don’t Have to Wait Until January 20 to Play One of the New PS Plus Extra Games

Some PlayStation fans get to play one upcoming PS Plus Extra game a little early, thanks to a free download previously made available to subscribers.

On January 20, PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can look forward to playing A Little to the Left, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead, Art of Rally, Darkest Dungeon, Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Resident Evil Village, and The Exit 8, with PS1 classic Ridge Racer available exclusively to the Premium tier. That same day, PS Plus Extra and Premium subscribers will have to say goodbye to Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, Monopoly Plus, Sayonara Wild Hearts, and SD Gundam Battle Alliance.

New PS Plus Extra and Premium Games for January 2026

  • A Little to the Left
  • A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead
  • Art of Rally
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game
  • Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Ridge Racer (Premium only)
  • The Exit 8

Between the Extra and Premium tiers, subscribers will soon have nine new games to play, including some heavy hitters. Resident Evil Village is making its debut a mere month before the sequel, Resident Evil Requiem, launches, and Darkest Dungeon has earned widespread critical acclaim. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, meanwhile, is a meaty turn-based RPG and generally considered one of the best games in the long-running Like a Dragon franchise. Infinite Wealth would make the new PS Plus Extra and Premium update for January 2026 exciting by itself, but it’s making its debut just as another Like a Dragon game is leaving.

PS Plus Extra and Premium Games Leaving Soon

  • Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name
  • Monopoly Plus
  • Sayonara Wild Hearts
  • SD Gundam Battle Alliance

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is leaving PS Plus Extra and Premium the very day that Infinite Wealth is joining the service. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name is much smaller in scale than Infinite Wealth, and it features a beat’em up battle system that’s more in line with previous entries in the franchise. It also features one of the most emotionally-charged narratives in the whole series, plus the events of the game lead directly into Infinite Wealth.

It would have been nice to be able to play both Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Infinite Wealth with a PS Plus Extra subscription, but unfortunately that won’t be possible come January 20. The good news is that Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name can be beaten in less than 15 hours, so subscribers do have some time to beat it before it’s removed from the service. Regardless, the fact that Infinite Wealth is coming just as The Man Who Erased His Name is leaving should make January 20 feel like an especially bittersweet day for PS Plus subscribers.
