Pokemon Winds and Waves are planned for release in 2027, contrary to the popular belief that they would be released in November 2026 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the series. However, unlike most reveal trailers, the one for Pokemon Winds and Waves gave an in-depth look at the world and the catching mechanics, rather than just showing the three starters. Speaking of, Pombon is clearly the current fan favorite based on social media reactions, but it could also become the most picked if it turned out to be a Fire/Fairy-type Pokemon when it evolves.
There are various reasons why Fire/Fairy-type Pokemon would be exciting, and Pombon could be an amazing candidate for this unique type combination. New generations typically introduce at least a few new type combos that were never present before, and with so few left to use at least once, Fire/Fairy could finally be real for the first time. The fact that this would be an entirely new type combination is alone a good reason to celebrate its potential introduction, but if it were to fall on Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ Pombon to be the first representative, it could be an even bigger deal.
Pokemon Winds and Waves Share More Starter Details
Game Freak follows up on the Pokemon Winds and Waves announcement with a few more details concerning the starter mons in the upcoming RPGs.
Fire/Fairy is One of The Best Type Combination in Pokemon Games
There is a reason why Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ Pombon is already so popular, and it’s because it’s repeating the same successful formula as Gen 9: a Fire-type starter that is adorable, but also fundamentally a bit dumb. Fuecoco did this perfectly, and it became tied for the most popular starter in its generation, even though Sprigatito is equally cute and also a cat. This makes Pombon already a favorite of many fans, and giving it an entirely new type would be the cherry on top.

More importantly, a Fire/Fairy-type Pokemon would simply be overpowered. Unless it gets terrible stats and/or moves, a Fire/Fairy Pokemon would:
- Hit Fighting, Bug, Steel, Grass, Ice, Dragon, and Dark for supereffective damage
- Resist Fighting, Fire, Grass, Ice, Dark, Fairy, and Bug for 50% to 75% damage reduction
- Be immune to Dragon-type moves
- Be weak only to Poison, Ground, Rock, and Water
- Have no 4x weaknesses
-
Be able to deal massive damage to some of the best Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet‘s VGC era, like:
- Miraidon
- Rillaboom
- Koraidon
- Zacian
- Raging Bolt
- Amoonguss
- Urshifu (both Styles)
- Iron Hands
- Chien-Pao
- Gholdengo
- Kingambit
- Dragonite
- Iron Crown
- Regidrago
- Roaring Moon
Why Pombon Should Be Fire/Fairy in Pokemon Winds and Waves
Giving a starter like Pombon the first Fire/Fairy type combination would have some other implications, too. An example is how the starters in Pokemon Winds and Waves may end up having a different and more refreshing type trifecta for their secondary types that doesn’t involve Fighting or Dark for a change. Not only that, but there are hopes from fans that Pombon will also stay on all fours.
Since Gen 10 games are set in a region inspired by Southeast Asia, there’s a chance that Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ Pombon’s final evolution will be inspired by the legendary Barong, a creature seen as the king of spirits and pure representation of good, opposing the demon queen. This would be a perfect fit for the first Fire/Fairy-type, and it may end up killing two birds with one stone by also giving fans a final Pombon evolution that stays quadrupedal.
Whether this turns out to be the case, Pokemon Winds and Waves‘ region is likely to be home to several new type combinations, even if Fire/Fairy doesn’t show among them. But if it does, there are multiple good candidates for inspiration within Southeast Asian folklore and myths, even if the Barong is not chosen, or if it has no ties to Pombon. It would be great if it did, though, and it would make the lovely Pomeranian-like critter all the more lovable.
