The long-awaited Skyrim mod Skywind has received its first major development update in two years. The update brings fans up to date on where the project, which aims to recreate the entirety of Morrowind in Skyrim from scratch, stands as of May 2026.
Skywind started development almost immediately upon the release of Skyrim‘s Creation Kit in 2012. Initially, the goal was to port assets from the popular Morroblivion mod into Skyrim, but the project’s scope continued to evolve. By 2016, the decision had been made to turn Skywind into a full Morrowind remake, with every asset remade from scratch by a team of talented volunteers. As of the latest development update, over 1,000 volunteers have helped in some capacity throughout Skywind‘s development. The last major development update for Skywind was in May 2024, but the team behind it has re-emerged to bring gamers up to speed on progress over the past two years.
Skyrim: Best Mods To Use On Xbox
Xbox users may only have access to a limited number of mods, but that doesn’t stop them from transforming Skyrim with some of the best mods out there.
Skywind Edges Closer to Completion After 14 Years of Development
The update comes in the form of a 32-minute YouTube video that explains in depth all the work the Skywind team has to do before the upcoming Skyrim mod is finally ready for full release. Both 2D and 3D art are nearly complete, while level design is close to wrapping up on several exterior regions. The animation team has made “considerable progress” since the last update in 2024, but still only remains 75% complete. Writing and voice acting are 96% and 92% complete, which will represent huge milestones for the project. However, Skywind has reopened volunteer applications to help recreate Morrowind‘s music, with some current gaps in the soundtrack. Perhaps most excitingly, quest implementation isn’t far off completion, a defining feature in the original Morrowind. Although this is a positive update, there is still no Skywind release date in sight.

Mods of this scale come into development all the time, but it’s rare that any of them actually see it through to completion. It’s easy to talk about bringing a project like Skywind to life, but actually doing it is another matter entirely. It’s impressive that Skywind looks set to be one of the exceptions to the rule and make it to the finish line. Despite the two-year gap between major development updates, there was never any indication that Skywind had met a similar fate to other huge Skyrim mods. The project has an active Discord server and has continued to release smaller teases over the last few years, but it’s still good to get a much bigger update like this.
It’s incredible to see what modders are able to do with Skyrim after all this time. On PC, modding can be completely transformative for the game, and mods are a massive reason why the game remains as popular as it is, almost 15 years after its initial launch.
Fit the 9 games into the grid.
Given the fact that Skyrim is still the most recent Elder Scrolls release, it’s the perfect environment for mods like Skywind to thrive. Often, mods like this will be too ambitious to complete in the time between releases, which naturally causes momentum to tail off. In many cases, this leads to projects being canceled. But with Bethesda taking its time to develop The Elder Scrolls 6, mods like Skywind and Skyblivion have been able to keep their momentum over the years, giving them the necessary time to come closer to completion.
