Nintendo Reveals Star Fox Switch 2 Amiibo Support

Nintendo’s upcoming Star Fox for the Switch 2 is a re-imagining of the Nintendo 64 classic with new features and better graphics, and it will also include amiibo support, which flew somewhat under the radar with the big reveal. Fans who have been holding onto their Star Fox amiibos since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, or anyone who intends to pick up the set with the new release, can expect to receive various in-game rewards.

Star Fox on the Nintendo Switch 2 is yet another remake of Star Fox 64, now with full voice acting, greatly improved visuals, and brand-new cutscenes. Fan reaction to the upcoming remake has been mixed, with many happy that Star Fox is back in some way, even if it doesn’t push the storyline forward, while others find that Nintendo barreling into Star Fox 64′s fourth remake is tiresome. With all the commotion about the new features, better graphics, and character design drama surrounding Star Fox, fans could have easily missed that the Switch 2 remake is getting amiibo support for compatible figures, featuring in-game unlocks. As detailed on Nintendo’s Japanese Star Fox page, owners of Star Fox amiibos can scan their figures on any Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to unlock various emblems and backgrounds for the players’ in-game “Battle Banner” that can be seen during online matches. Current compatible amiibo include Fox, Falco, and Wolf, which fans may remember were released 10 years ago as part of the Super Smash Bros amiibo set. It seems like no other amiibo lines are compatible at this time.

Nintendo has always been pretty good about supporting all of its franchises with various amiibo figurines; however, it seems like Star Fox won’t be getting a new line to coincide with the upcoming release. With three existing amiibo figures featuring fan favorites, Fox, Falco, and Wolf, Nintendo might appear to think that these are enough amiibo for this franchise in particular. Star Fox has never been one of the company’s biggest IPs, after all. But it could be a good time to round out the Star Fox characters with Slippy Frog and Peppy Hare, or maybe release a dedicated Star Fox amiibo set with the rest of Team Star Wolf in the mix.

Hopefully, a new line of Star Fox amiibos launches sometime after the upcoming game’s release for those who love collecting figurines of Nintendo’s most popular franchises. As far as what players are actually getting in Star Fox when they scan their amiibos, the unlocks seem meager, but still worthwhile for fans who have held on to Fox, Falco, or Wolf for various years. Fans of online play should be fairly enticed to dust off their collection when Star Fox launches on June 25.

Fox McCloud’s big return is a huge moment for fans who have been waiting for the franchise to return to the mainstream, with some good news on its price point. Star Fox will actually have a lower price at launch than its contemporaries, to the delight of fans.
