Pokopia is Making Ditto Way More Popular

The popularity of Pokemon Pokopia has caused Ditto’s stock price to jump up quite a bit in recent weeks, both figuratively and literally, as prices on official trading cards featuring the Transform Pokemon have been steadily climbing. The Ditto in Pokemon Pokopia is a unique creature with its own special life goals, but the deep connection it’s been making with fans is now spilling over across the entire Ditto population in some unexpected ways.

From the time Pokemon Pokopia was first revealed, many Pokemon fans predicted it to be an instant hit, as taking on the role of a Ditto in human form and transforming a barren island into a cozy home for hundreds of different Pokemon resonated with the masses. That success came to fruition early after the game’s launch on March 5, with Nintendo’s announcement that Pokemon Pokopia sold more than 2.2 million units in its first four days alone, already putting it in a high spot among the list of the top-selling games in the Switch 2’s short history.

But sales of the new life sim itself don’t appear to be the only aspect of Pokemon that is seeing a boost from Ditto’s newfound popularity, as its collection of cards in the Pokemon Trading Card Game has been seeing prices soar since a few weeks before Pokemon Pokopia’s release, with additional jumps after the game came out. Ditto has made an appearance in 19 different official sets released for the trading card game, with 31 unique cards and 57 variants counted among them. Market tracking provided by TCGPlayer shows that several of these cards have become much more valuable since around the middle of January, with some seeing their value more than double since that time.

Some of the cards seeing bigger jumps include the reverse holofoil version from the Boundaries Crossed expansion, which was first released in English in 2012. That particular card went from an average sales price of $6 in the period from January 11-13 to its current value of $14.72. In another example, the market price of the Triumphant version of Ditto from 2010 has taken a similar trajectory, rising from $4.26 to $8.84 within the same timeframe, and seeing its biggest rise in its recent value graph occurring just around the time of Pokopia‘s release.

While more common Ditto cards are seeing big jumps in their value, they’re far from the most expensive cards featuring Ditto in the Pokekmon TCG. The top of the value rankings is currently held by a special promo card, Ditto (Squirtle), which was released exclusively for Games Expo 2007 and bears a market price of $350, with the most recent sale recorded by TCGPlayer listed at $525. Bearing the event’s logo, that card is a variant of the same card in the EX Delta Species series, which features versions of Ditto transformed into a bunch of different Gen-1 Pokemon, including Pikachu, Geodude, Mr. Mime, and all three of the original Kanto starters featured in Pokemon Red and Blue. ThePriceDex values the cards in this collection as being anywhere between $20 and $245, with the Squirtle version at the top.

While Pokemon Pokopia‘s positive effect on the franchise can be felt in many facets of the franchise, the game is also doing very well for itself in its own right. Just a few days before its release, Pokemon Pokopia became the highest-rated Pokemon game of all time among professional critics, registering a cumulative score of 89, which just narrowly beat out Gen-7 mainline game Pokemon Y‘s score of 88. Reactions from players since the game’s launch have also been overwhelmingly positive, with OpenCritic player reviews registering it as a perfect 100.
