The Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 community has been left massively concerned after developer Treyarch Studios reintroduced Supply Drops, a controversial mechanic that offers players random in-game rewards when opened. Although currently free as part of the Lost Outpost event in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone, fans are concerned that Activision could be “testing the waters” for the return of a paid version of the feature, something it has done in the past.
Lost Outpost is the latest event to kick off in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone as part of the shooter’s big Season 3 update, but it has arrived earlier than expected. Earlier this week, fans noticed that a brand-new bundle had arrived in the in-game store. While not exactly out of the ordinary, it didn’t take long before players realized that the bundle, Ghille Drift, also came with a blueprint for the unreleased Strider 300 Sniper Rifle, which was supposed to be unlockable via the Lost Outpost event. Treyarch says this was due to a technical issue with the store, and therefore decided to kick off the event two days earlier to ensure things remained fair for everyone looking to get their hands on the new weapon.

Call of Duty fans take to social media to express their anger over a new Dave Chappelle bundle in Black Ops 7 and Warzone for Season 3.
Black Ops 7 Fans Respond to Supply Drops Returning for New Event
Similar to many of the game’s previous events, Lost Outpost gives Black Ops 7 fans tons of rewards for collecting Beacons, which are dropped by eliminated opponents. Rewards vary between emblems and stickers to Double XP tokens and weapon blueprints, as well as the new Strider 300 Sniper Rifle. However, obtaining the rewards isn’t like past events, as Activision and Treyarch have brought back Supply Drops, which award the in-game items randomly. In total, there are three different Supply Drops: the 5-Beacon Drop, which includes a Sticker, Decal, Emblem, and Double XP Tokens, the 10-Beacon Drop, which includes a Weapon Charm, Calling Card, Loading Screen, and Double XP Tokens, and the 20-Beacon Drop, which includes the new Strider 300 Sniper Rifle, a Weapon Blueprint, and more.
The Lost Outpost Supply Drops can only be obtained by collecting Beacons in-game. The currency used to unlock them cannot be purchased with real-life money.
Although the Supply Drops are free to unlock, players believe it is setting a dangerous precedent moving forward. Twitter user Stanley557 says, “This is what we in the industry like to call foreshadowing,” while fellow user and former Call of Duty leaker Reality said, “You just know this is only the beginning.” Many others echoed similar sentiments, with comments such as “this is how it starts” and “they’re testing the waters” being the most common responses from the community.
Call of Duty is no stranger to Supply Drops, as the feature has appeared in multiple iterations over the years, including Black Ops 3 and Modern Warfare Remastered, both of which allowed players to purchase the Drops using real-life money transactions. While Call of Duty isn’t the only series to have featured a Supply Drop/Loot Box system in its games, many have phased out the controversial feature as various countries have since imposed restrictions on the gambling-esque mechanic. Although the laws vary between countries, the likes of Belgium have made the feature completely illegal, while Brazil has only restricted loot boxes for minors, which means it is unlikely that Call of Duty will bring Supply Drops back in a paid capacity.

Despite the restrictions, there are plenty of live service titles that still have a Loot Box mechanic, such as Overwatch 2 (now simply known as Overwatch), which is also an Activision-published title. Although not available to purchase directly, they can be obtained via the free and premium Battle Pass. The game’s director addressed the controversial return of loot boxes in Overwatch early last year, saying the decision to bring the feature back was because the team felt as though the game simply wasn’t rewarding enough.
