The highly anticipated Fable reboot being developed by Playground Games could be facing another delay, potentially pushing the game into 2027 if a recent rumor is to be believed. While nothing is yet official, the news is likely to disappoint fans and the already lengthy wait they’ve had to endure for the next Fable game. The franchise itself has certainly experienced hardship after the release of Fable 3 and the eventual closure of Lionhead Studios.
Following the cancellation of Fable Legends in 2016, the franchise as a whole entered a period of dormancy, with longtime fans wondering if the series would ever make a comeback. To the surprise of most, a newly rebooted Fable was announced back in 2020 by Forza Horizon studio, Playground Games. Since that point, it would be another 3 years until the first gameplay-centric trailer was revealed in 2023, with multiple delays ultimately continuing to push the release date further down the road.
Fable Could be Delayed Into 2027
However, a new reveal at the Xbox Developer Showcase in January confirmed the Fable release window for Fall 2026, with a simultaneous launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. While many fans likely felt like traction was finally being made, a new rumor from industry veteran Jeff Grubb may be pouring a bit of cold water on things. During his Game Mess broadcast, Grubb mentioned that he had heard that Fable had already been pushed internally, though cautioned that it didn’t mean the game would now be releasing in 2027.
However, the issue seems to revolve around the potential launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. While Playground Games appears to be working to release Fable in 2026, the currently scheduled November 19 release date for GTA 6 continues to cause planning related issues, considering the massive sales expectations for the latest entry of Rockstar’s biggest franchise. With most games trying to avoid releasing anywhere close to GTA 6, the potential safest option would be to outright delay Fable into December and at that point, if the team needs more time or further separation from Grand Theft Auto, Fable would become a prime candidate just to launch in 2027 instead.
Avoiding new Rockstar Games releases has become a major strategy for most studios, as its games generate an incredible amount of hype and anticipation, basically causing them to overshadow most media, including theatrical releases. While GTA 6 is expected to pull in billions of dollars in revenue, especially if the longevity of GTA 5 is any indication, there remain plenty of questions surrounding its current release date. While information regarding GTA 6 continues to be sparsely provided by ROckstar and Take-Two, some are predicting that the game could see another delay into 2027. With the potential for another move, other studios who are attempting to figure out their own release schedule for upcoming games has been more difficult than usual, as they weigh whether to launch later this year in the hopes that GTA 6 moves, or push into 2027 with the hopes that it also doesn’t get delayed.

For now, it appears that Fable fans will be in for a bit of a wait, as Playground Games has largely been heads down after revealing new information and gameplay during the Xbox Developer Direct event. The good news is that Microsoft and Playground did offer a wealth of new information for fans to dig their teeth into, such as a massive open world that once again takes place in Albion and features familiar settings like the city of Bowerstone. The morality system also returns, though instead of binary choices like good or evil, players will be able to interact with a living and social world populated by NPCs that react to the choices players make and traits they’ve earned over time.
