Ubisoft continues to see massive corporate restructurings, with the latest major change allegedly including the cancellation of the in-development Alterra, a cozy game that had been in development for three years and featured a mix of gameplay mechanics similar to those found in Animal Crossing and Minecraft. While Alterra was never officially announced, insider information on the game had quickly drawn the attention of fans, and many were hoping to see new releases like Pokemon Pokopia inspiring Ubisoft to go public with confirmation of the project. Unfortunately, the latest rumors are now claiming that, just like a half-dozen other in-development titles, Alterra has gotten the axe from Ubisoft.
The first teasers of an Animal Crossing game by Ubisoft popped up in late 2024 and revealed a game that would follow the social sim format of Animal Crossing with voxel visuals while introducing material-gathering and building mechanics a la Minecraft. At the time, audiences were excited by the possibility of Nintendo having an AAA life-sim competitor that could bring a new cozy experience to fans of the genre. Despite any fan hype for the project, it would seem that Alterra will no longer be coming to fruition, and audiences are understandably disappointed.

Ubisoft Cancels Its Cozy Social Life-Sim Alterra
According to internal information from Ubisoft shared directly with Insider Gaming, the same outlet that originally reported on the existence of Alterra back in 2024, a notice was sent to staff working on Alterra on Tuesday, April 21, notifying the developers that the game had been canceled. There were supposedly no layoffs announced in tandem with the cancellation of Alterra, though it has been claimed that employees who were working on the game have now been made available to contribute to other projects at Ubisoft. No official word or insider details have shared the full scope of Alterra‘s cancelation, with multiple support studios for Alterra‘s development now left without work.

Alterra joins a growing list of games canceled by Ubisoft since the beginning of 2026, with The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake and multiple Assassin’s Creed titles among the projects to be canned. Ubisoft has also announced repeated rounds of layoffs and even full studio closures, all attributed to larger restructuring efforts that aim to reduce costs and maximize efficiency. It remains to be seen if Alterra could still be sold off or revived sometime down the road, but the lack of any official reveals before Alterra‘s termination may indicate that audiences won’t want to hold their breath for a cozy life-sim from Ubisoft anytime soon.
Other unannounced projects that have allegedly been impacted by Ubisoft’s recent workforce reductions and game cancellations include the future of the Watch Dogs franchise, which is “completely dead” according to those with insider knowledge. Audiences have continued to voice their disappointment with Ubisoft’s recent decisions, and some have even accused Ubisoft of refusing to release games with major competition, perhaps referencing Watch Dogs, often compared to Grand Theft Auto, and now Alterra, which would have faced-off with future Animal Crossing releases. Of course, these claims are purely fan speculation, but the sheer multitude of cancellations and layoffs at Ubisoft are understandably being met with confusion and discontent, both of which may take some time to smooth out.
