A God of War Laufey and Expedition 33 Crossover is Destined to Happen

A God of War Laufey and Expedition 33 Crossover is Destined to Happen

Despite some truly strange backlash to God of War Laufey upon its initial reveal — with even Domino’s pizza taking cheap shots at the game — a vast majority of gamers seem excited to experience Faye’s story. Hyped up as an even better fighter than Kratos himself in the Norse games, Faye’s ability to juggle enemies in the air and wield magic should keep combat consistently fun. Beyond just the gameplay, the new setting of the Everywhen, which is an afterlife for all the gods from all different mythologies that should allow for a ton of interesting scenery and lore. It could also be home to a bunch of references, and one of those nods being to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 seems like a given.

On the surface, there’s nothing connecting Santa Monica’s action franchise to Sandfall’s turn-based RPG; the series’ worlds play by very different rules, and Clair Obscur isn’t a PlayStation exclusive. Obviously, that doesn’t mean Santa Monica can’t just reference one of the best games released in the last decade within God of War Laufey if it wants to do so — after all, how many games have homages to Dark Souls despite offering gameplay that’s entirely different from that of a soulslike? Still, it does rule out a reference in a PlayStation-filled collectible category like Ragnarok’s poems. Fortunately, there’s a less obvious connection between the two games that strengthens the chances of a nod to Expedition 33 in Faye’s upcoming interquel: Charlie Cox’s role as Gustave.

Even Domino’s Pizza is Throwing Shade at God of War Laufey

A strange backlash to God of War Laufey’s new protagonist reaches new heights as a pizza company, of all things, is criticizing the game.

Daredevil Gives Deborah Ann Woll and Charlie Cox an Unbreakable Connection

While Charlie Cox himself has obviously downplayed his contributions to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, that doesn’t change how great he was at playing Gustave and how he helped elevate the character to being a true fan favorite. For gamers, it’s seen as his best role, though fans of the Marvel universe and quality television will likely have a different character in that position: Matt Murdock, AKA Daredevil. Cox has been and continues to be a perfect fit for the Man Without Fear, stealing every scene he’s in, regardless of whether he’s portraying Matt’s smooth talking lawyer side or the violent vigilante that protects Hell’s Kitchen. In both Netflix’s Daredevil and the Disney+ revival Born Again, he’s joined by a full cast of side characters, one of which is Karen Page.

While Karen received flak in the early seasons for taking up too much screentime from the show’s titular hero, her character improved drastically over time, shining as brightly as many other characters from Season 3 onward. Karen has been an on-again-off-again romantic interest for Matt (not to mention her interesting dynamic with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher), so Marvel fans have seen a lot of her over the last decade. She’s become a recognizable character in her own right, growing on fans partially due to the top-notch acting from Deborah Ann Woll: AKA, Faye. Deborah Ann Woll and Charlie Cox have been fixtures of Daredevil for years, a critically acclaimed series that is currently filming its sixth Season. And now, they’re both lead characters in massive video games, a connection that Santa Monica could lean on for a fun little Easter egg.

Charlie Cox is so attached to the Daredevil role and has spent so much time playing the blind lawyer that he’s previously mentioned fumbling auditions because he forgets to use his eyes.

God of War’s Clair Obscur Crossover Doesn’t Have to Be Big To Be Fun

To be clear, nobody is saying that Gustave himself has to pop up in the Everywhen. Instead, the Clair Obscur homage could come in a far more subtle way. Perhaps Charlie Cox plays a bit role in God of War Laufey so that he can share a small scene with his longtime co-star in her latest project. The character could be a tinkerer, have a name similar to Gustave, or be missing an arm, creating some kind of parallel to Cox’s previous game role. He could even look like a devil, making the connection blatantly obvious, and the moment would undoubtedly serve as a fan favorite Easter egg for anyone familiar with the career of Faye’s actor.

Alternatively, if Charlie Cox can’t find the time to record a cameo for God of War Laufey, then there are other ways to tip the hat to Gustave. Perhaps Faye or one of her allies could utter one of his iconic lines — “for those who come after” is the obvious choice, though the cube character Phranque saying that he’s “readying his usefulness for tomorrow” would be fitting as well. A book resembling Gustave’s journal being tucked away somewhere in the world could work, too; maybe a quote is scrawled on the page, or even the number 33. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how the reference happens, it would just be awesome if it did. Having two lead characters from the same beloved TV show go on to star in some gigantic video games (which also release in such close proximity to each other) is a rare occurrence, and one that makes sense to honor in some way.
