A Lost Final Fantasy Game Has Been Brought Back to Life By a Fan

A Lost Final Fantasy Game Has Been Brought Back to Life By a Fan

A long-lost Final Fantasy 7 Keitai game has been fully preserved and made playable again after a years-long fan effort to recover its inaccessible files. The project restores one of the more obscure entries in the Final Fantasy catalog nearly two decades after its original mobile release.

Keitai games were developed for Japanese feature phones from the late 1990s through the late 2010s, with publishers such as Square Enix distributing titles through services including NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode. Preserving these titles, especially those from the format’s earlier years, has proved unusually difficult because of proprietary hardware and software, security measures, and online dependencies. Grassroots groups like Keitai Archive have for years worked to recover titles that are no longer commercially accessible. In many cases, modern Keitai recovery projects require extraordinary efforts from those communities.

Next Final Fantasy Game Already Has One Confirmed Feature

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is making some high-level design changes, including a shift in how optional content is presented and incentivized.

Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode Is Now Fully Preserved

Final Fantasy 7 Spin-Off Recovered from an Encrypted SD Card

Another Keitai title, Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode -Final Fantasy 7-, has now joined the growing list of recovered feature-phone games. Game preservationist Yuvi detailed their latest recovery in an August 2026 Medium article, saying the team behind the achievement obtained a complete copy of Lost Episode in 2024 after its owner agreed to dump an SD card containing the game data. The key problem from that point onward was that the files were encrypted, and the group lacked access to a special partition normally needed to retrieve the decryption key. As a result, the full game remained inaccessible for roughly two more years.

Recovering Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode Cost Around $900

Yuvi ultimately determined that Lost Episode stored its downloaded files as encrypted ZIP archives, allowing known ZIP headers to be used to test possible keys. After developing custom brute-force software using the OpenCL framework, the preservationist spun up more than 90 GPU-equipped servers using Nvidia GPUs from the last few generations, reaching nearly 5.5 trillion key attempts per second across over 125 decryption software instances. The setup recovered all the necessary decryption keys in roughly 72 hours, with Yuvi estimating the total cost at more than $900. The extraordinary effort required to recover the title helps illustrate why some lost games from the Keitai era can remain inaccessible even after their underlying data has been found.

Lost Episode was released in North America in August 2006 before arriving in Japan in July 2007, where it was available on compatible DoCoMo feature phones. Co-developed by Square Enix and Ideaworks3D, the shooter serves as a companion to the PlayStation 2 game Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7, following Vincent Valentine through events not depicted in the console title.

Final Fantasy 14 On Switch 2 Has A Serious Problem

A portion of Lost Episode had already been rescued in 2023 from a demo pulled from a DoCoMo P903i phone. Preservationists made that version playable through the DoJa 5.1 SDK, but the process was far from user-friendly and still suffered from numerous emulation issues. Those limitations underline why Yuvi’s recovery remains notable despite not being the first successful preservation effort involving the game. Work is also underway on another unnamed Keitai title recovered around the same period, while a separate effort to preserve Before Crisis: Final Fantasy 7 continues. Together, these projects show that much of the franchise’s older mobile history still relies on fan preservation, even as newer releases continue to revisit the legacy of the original Final Fantasy 7.
