After a period of radio silence from Absobo Studio, the development team has finally opened up about Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, sharing brand-new details about its main character and hinting that the game is close to launch. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set to be the third entry in the tense, historical Plague Tale series, known for its rich storytelling and dense atmosphere.
A Plague Tale: Innocence is the first entry in the series, launching in 2019 to critical acclaim and rapidly becoming a AA-indie darling. Inspired by works like The Last of Us, Asobo Studio set out to create a story-rich game set in 14th-century France, following protagonist Amicia de Rune and her sickly brother Hugo as they run from the French Inquisition, which has taken an interest in Hugo and his illness. A Plague Tale: Innocence was such a hit that it was quickly followed up by A Plague Tale: Requiem in 2022, a continuation of Amicia and Hugo’s story that ultimately saw the end of their journey in the series. Asobo’s return to A Plague Tale with its prequel, Resonance, was announced at Summer Games Fest 2025, but the development team has been silent ever since.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Explores Sophia’s Dark Past
Now, Asobo and Focus Entertainment have broken their silence on Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy with a devblog post that dives into detail about the game’s main protagonist, Sophia, and are stating that the release might be close by. Asobo’s devblog post states that Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set 15 years before the events of Innocence and Requiem, following the childhood and young adulthood of Sophia — the charismatic smuggler fans may recall from Requiem — and how she was molded into the “Scorpion of the Seas” in a violent upbringing and environment. Additionally, the development team has stated that Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is “almost here” as Asobo is in the final stages of development, including final tweaks, gameplay refinements, and final recording sessions.

At the time of this writing, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy still does not have a firm release date, but Aboso Studio and Focus Entertainment’s devblog does seem to leave fans on a positive note for a release date coming soon. The game is in what appears to be the final stages of development, and the studio has three more devblogs coming in the future that will hopefully provide more details about what fans can expect from Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, and maybe a release date. The next devblogs include an interview with Sophia’s voice actor and an “Into the Myth” blog post.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy seems that it won’t be holding back on the heavy themes and rich storytelling that the franchise is known for. Adobo Studio states that Sophia’s story will explore A Plague Tale‘s familiar themes of grief and abandonment, and that the team loves how she was written due to her various flaws and loving her for those flaws. This version of Sophia is rougher, looser, and more carefree, acting somewhat of a departure from the more mature and level-headed version of Sophia that fans met in Requiem.

In keeping with this grittier story and character arc, it seems Adobo Studio has taken great care in reworking Sophia’s whole look for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, taking into account, for example, her hair now having a more “feral” appearance and her day-to-day outfits being a bit more eccentric. Fans of A Plague Tale have a lot to look forward to and may likely have a lot to sink their teeth into soon, once an official release date for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is announced. Hopefully, fans won’t have to wait too much longer to experience Sophia’s story.
