A Switch Game is Being Delisted on June 1

A Switch Game is Being Delisted on June 1

Nintendo Switch owners have just a couple of months left to purchase Horizon Chase Turbo, as the racing game is being delisted from the eShop on June 1. Horizon Chase Turbo pays tribute to the arcade racing games of the past, with 16-bit graphics and a soundtrack composed by Barry Leitch, who previously worked on genre classics like Rush and Top Gear. While the game offers content for solo players, it also offers local split-screen multiplayer, as well as online leaderboards. The game has been available on the Nintendo Switch eShop since 2018, and was followed by a sequel released on the system in 2023.

Horizon Chase Turbo has been mostly well-regarded since launch; the game currently holds a Top Critic average of 79 on OpenCritic. Given the massive number of games on the Nintendo Switch eShop, it’s possible Horizon Chase Turbo might have flown under the radar for some owners of the system, but those who have played it have largely had positive things to say. On a system that doesn’t have a Gran Turismo or Forza Horizon, it’s a bit harder to find good racing games on Switch that aren’t Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Horizon Chase Turbo has clearly been filling the void for Switch owners who want something a little different, but it won’t be available on the system for much longer.

A New Nintendo Switch 2 Console Model is Coming, But There’s a Catch

Less than a year after launch, a new version of Nintendo Switch 2 is coming, but not everyone will be able to get their hands on it.

Why Horizon Chase Turbo is Leaving Nintendo Switch

Horizon Chase Turbo will be removed from the Nintendo Switch eShop and other digital platforms on June 1. The news was confirmed in a post on the game’s official X account, which noted that Horizon Chase 2 will remain available. The original version of Horizon Chase is also being delisted on other platforms, though the game never made its way to Nintendo Switch. An exact reason for these games being delisted has not been provided by Aquiris Game Studio, but the developer was acquired by Epic Games in 2023. News of the delisting followed an announcement that Epic Games is cutting 1,000 jobs at the company, leading to fan speculation that there might be a connection. No one from the team has confirmed that, as of this writing.

In the meantime, anyone interested can still purchase Horizon Chase Turbo for $19.99. Aquiris Game Studio has confirmed that those who own Horizon Chase Turbo will still be able to download it on the eShop after June 1, but new purchases will not be possible. That’s usually the case when Switch games are delisted, but the confirmation should come as a relief for current owners of the game. Following Horizon Chase Turbo‘s release, the game was supported with extra content, including the Senna Forever and Summer Vibes DLC packs. Presumably, all extra content will also be delisted from the eShop on June 1, so owners who haven’t scooped up that content might want to do so while there’s still time left. It also seems unlikely that the game’s leaderboards will be left intact, since online features tend to be removed from games on Nintendo Switch and other platforms after being delisted.

Game delistings are an unfortunate reality of the current video game industry. When these things happen, it’s often because the licensing rights for that particular game have expired. That seems to be the reason Jurassic Park Classic Games Collection is being delisted on Nintendo Switch and other platforms on March 31. However, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case with Horizon Chase Turbo. It’s not really clear why this is happening, except that there simply might not be members of the studio available to work on any bugs or issues that arise following the layoffs at Epic Games. Horizon Chase Turbo‘s delisting is bound to come as a disappointment to fans, but thankfully, there was advance notice, as that’s not always the case.
