Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Introduces ‘Adaptive Enemies’

In a new blog post, Ubisoft reveals new combat details for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and how the game has changed from its original version. One of the worst-kept secrets for Ubisoft was the existence of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a modernized take on the original 2013 title. After all the rumors and delayed announcements, Ubisoft finally revealed the upcoming title and just how much this new version has changed in 13 years.

For many fans, the most striking aspect of this remake will likely be the visuals, as Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is using the latest version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine. In addition, many elements of the original have been reworked, including the UI, improved stealth, a parkour overhaul, dynamic weather, and a more open-ended approach to missions, reminiscent of the “Black Box” style introduced in Assassin’s Creed Unity. There’s also new content to uncover, including narrative experiences and additional stories to flesh out certain characters, like Blackbeard or Stede Bonnet. In terms of the combat, though, Ubisoft revealed more on just how this is changing, including smarter enemies to introduce a bit more challenge.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Will Not Feature Levels or Gear Scores

Ubisoft confirms that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will remain an action-adventure experience free of the RPG mechanics of recent entries.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Introduces Adaptive Enemies

In a new blog post, Ubisoft discussed the combat of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which has completely reworked the systems present in the original game. While the Hidden Blade is also getting changed in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, creative director Paul Fu also touched on new enemy behaviors which are intended to make combat more demanding. Specifically, enemies will adapt to the player and react to certain playstyles, especially if they’re used repetitively. For those who like to parry, enemies will eventually pick up on this and start utilizing Unstoppable Attacks to force players to act more aggressive. Alternatively, an overly aggressive player, especially one that enjoys kicking enemies over and over will see them start to dodge more often. The goal with combat is to keep enemies guessing by varying up moves, combos, and using both offensive and defensive tools to keep them confused.

Alongside adaptive enemies, Fu also revealed more about advanced enemy archtypes and how soldiers will now coordinate attacks rather than simply waiting for one after another. Specifically, Fu mentioned the Brute, Captain, and Demolitionist archtypes, which are more difficult to deal with than common soldiers. Chain takedown attempts will be denied as they have higher defense and utilize unblockable attacks more often. Players will want to use their flintlock more often against these enemies to first break their defense and open them up for attack or the rope dart tool to draw them in to combo.

In addition to combat, stealth is another aspect getting a major overhaul in the remake. Ubisoft has already mentioned that the parkour and stealth in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced utilizes the mechanics found in Shadows. This means the parkour system will be more open and smoother than it was previously, with directional inputs, side ejects, and more. Stealth is also more open giving Edward more ways to influence his surroundings while staying out of sight. The Tailing and Eavesdropping missions no longer automatically desync for getting caught either.

Based on all of these changes, Ubisoft is championing the inclusion of the Anvil Engine, calling it the heart of the Black Flag remake. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced game director Richard Knight mentioned that in addition to improved mechanics and features like the parkour system, utilizing the Anvil Engine gave the team access to things like raytracing, dynamic weather, destructible objects, and more.
