Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced Reportedly Drops Anchor This July

It seems the rumors may be real after all: The Assassin’s Creed 4 remake will reportedly launch on July 9. While details–like launch platforms–are unknown, we can revel in the fact that the best entry in Ubisoft’s stab-and-dash franchise appears to be making a comeback, and it seems to be sooner than we all initially thought.

According to Insider Gaming, the AC IV: Black Flag remake was scheduled to be revealed on April 16, but Ubisoft reportedly postponed the announcement until sometime next week. However, content creators and games media already saw about 30 minutes of it and, as Insider Gaming noted, it’s been “completely reworked” with a bunch of new content and “looks awesome.”

The game is officially called Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. It’s a silly title–one that was accidentally revealed on a PEGI ratings board in December 2025.

Silly name or not, this is wonderful news for fans of the swashbuckling adventure. The sixth major entry that dropped in 2013, Black Flag is often regarded as one of the best Assassin’s Creed games because of its story, characters, and, most especially, its naval combat.

You play as Edward Kenway, the grandfather of Assassin’s Creed 3 protagonist, Ratonhnhaké:ton (or Connor Kenway), and the father of that game’s antagonist, Haytham Kenway. Black Flag starts as a pirate simulator, as Edward pillages and plunders across the Seven Seas, before becoming this high-stakes battle against the Templar Order for ultimate power–because everything’s always about “ultimate power,” isn’t it? From stabbing people in the neck to swinging and shooting multiple swords and guns to blasting cannons atop your upgradable naval vessel, Black Flag is really one of those AC games that everyone’s played and loved, or everyone’s heard of and wants to play.

It was so influential that it spawned the Rogue spin-off in 2014 that bridged the gap between the two entries. And the naval combat–which was birthed in ACIII but perfected in ACIV–brought us 2024’s Skull and Bones, a much-maligned game that didn’t do naval combat justice. At least, not in the way that Black Flag did.

When Black Flag does return as Resynced, it may not be the same game we got in 2013. In fact, the modern-day sections where you’re exploring the Abstergo Entertainment offices outside of the pod-like, VR-esque Animus system will reportedly be cut in favor of more stabby-stabby-kill-kill moments. While those exploration segments were pivotal for the narrative, there will be an additional story for the English pirate and fellow assassin, Mary Read, which never made it into the OG game.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced is reportedly scheduled to launch on July 9, and ahead of the game’s official reveal and release, it appears there’s already merch out there.
