Battlefield 6 Overhauls A Classic Map’s Biggest Feature For Season 3

Season 3 of Battlefield 6 arrives next month, and the update is set to introduce the game’s largest map to date. Railway to Golmud is revealed as a reimagining of Battlefield 4’s popular Golmud Railway map, and the developer has shared a closer look at the map and some key changes players can expect, including major changes to the train.

In the latest blog, Battlefield Studios calls this reimagined version of Golmud Railway a “tribute to the veteran Battlefield community.”

“We have better technology than we did 13 years ago,” said level designer Luka Grepl-Malmgren. “Two of the original level artists of Golmud Railway are still here at DICE, so we all worked together to not only recreate their work, but also understand what was not possible in Battlefield 4 and bring those ideas to life in Battlefield 6.”

At launch, Golmud Railway was the largest map in Battlefield 4, and its most notable feature was the moving train players could capture. Now, the developers have overhauled the train’s movement logic and design for the reimagined Railway to Golmud. The train is redesigned to offer several carts for more cover and parkour opportunities.

In terms of movement, the train will now progress toward the enemy headquarters instead of the headquarters of the team who captured the objective. The developer said the change was made to prevent stagnant gameplay with the train.

“In this version, the train is now easier to capture back, but also the team holding the objective now has a strategic place to spawn and capture the flag closest to their enemy’s HQ,” Grepl-Malmgren explained.

While the train is perhaps the most notable change, Railway to Golmud also features dozens of updates to add more cover for infantry, better flanking opportunities, and additional airspace for better vertically. An example of the map changes can be seen in the image shown above.

Some of the biggest criticisms of Battlefield 6 have been the lack of maps in general, as well as the lack of the large vehicle-driven maps that the franchise is known for. Battlefield Studios looks to remedy this with Season 3 and beyond, as the latest roadmap details more large maps are planned to arrive after Railway to Golmud.
