Bethesda’s Fallout 3 Trailer Post Exposed a Problem That Oblivion Remastered Created

Bethesda just recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, but it also just marked the anniversary of Fallout 3. With such an impressive milestone achieved by the studio and its first Fallout game turning 18 years old, it would present the perfect opportunity for the developer to bring forth a few big surprises. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and a lot of fans have been left specifically frustrated with how Bethesda has handled the Fallout 3 anniversary.

Fallout 3 officially turned 18 on October 28. It’s hard to believe that it’s been so long since Bethesda’s first-ever Fallout game debuted. Since Bethesda has been so tight-lipped about the progress of its two main franchises, a lot of fans probably weren’t even really expecting the studio to acknowledge the occasion. It’s an impressive milestone, but it also isn’t a round number anniversary like 20 years would be, so it’s safe to assume that the date would come and go without any word. Bethesda spoke up, though, and the response to the celebration highlights how the Oblivion Remastered launch has given fans the wrong idea about what to expect from the developer with other game releases.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters’ Best Launch Strategy Is Clear

Now that the Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters are confirmed, Bethesda can make the wait worth it with this one release strategy.

Fallout 3’s Anniversary Post Shows That Oblivion Remastered Raised Fan Expectations Higher Than Bethesda Anticipated

Bethesda’s Fallout 3 anniversary post was simply a Twitter post of the original game’s trailer. The Fallout 3 trailer is iconic, so it makes sense for Bethesda to choose it as a way to celebrate the anniversary. However, once people saw a post from Bethesda that mentioned Fallout 3, many immediately assumed that it must be a reveal for the now-confirmed remaster that the studio is working on. A Fallout 3 remaster is something that fans have wanted for a long time, so the excitement quickly faded once the realization kicked in that the trailer was for the original game.

This knee-jerk reaction to assume that it was a Fallout 3 remaster announcement is all because of how Bethesda handled the Oblivion Remastered launch. Oblivion Remastered was shadow-dropped last year, making it one of the biggest surprises of 2025. After it became clear that Starfield was a flop, Oblivion Remastered getting a surprise release gave Bethesda a solid win. I fully believe that Bethesda made the right call by shadow-dropping Oblivion Remastered, but I don’t think the studio realized that this would set higher expectations down the road.

Once people saw a post from Bethesda that mentioned Fallout 3, many immediately assumed that it must be a reveal for the now-confirmed remaster that the studio is working on.

Bethesda Has Five Games in the Works

  • Fallout 3 remaster
  • Fallout: New Vegas remaster
  • The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel
  • Unnamed Fallout spin-off made by Obsidian Entertainment
  • Fallout 5

Whether one’s more of an Elder Scrolls lover or a Fallout fan, both corners of the Bethesda community have been suffering from silence. The Elder Scrolls crowd has been starving for something fresh, but Oblivion Remastered at least offered a way to pass the time while the wait for The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel release date drags on. When it comes to Fallout, Fallout 76 and the TV show have been carrying the franchise, and the latter has largely been a lot more compelling than the former.

Since a Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remaster have been confirmed, a lot of fans of the post-apocalyptic series have probably been hoping for its very own Oblivion Remastered moment. Seeing Bethesda’s anniversary post sparked a glimmer of hope only for it to be snuffed out as quickly as it appeared.

Bethesda Is Seeing the Consequences of Its Silence

There are a lot of game developers that have kept fans in the dark for a while, and Bethesda is definitely near the top of that list. Ever since Asha Sharma took charge as the new Xbox CEO, the studio has been more vocal than it has been in years, though. This could simply be a coincidence, but it also feels like Bethesda has been instructed by the new leadership to bring players more transparency, especially with Xbox trying to revamp its image. Transparency and communication are great things, but Bethesda being so quiet over the years has created the expectation that any word from the developer is meant to bring forth some major surprise.

If this really is a new era where Bethesda is more vocal, that’s great. However, the developer actually has to bring news to the table worth getting excited about instead of simply recycling old material. The fact that it took eight years since its original announcement to learn The Elder Scrolls 6 title is baffling. After waiting this long, players are expecting far more than just teaser trailers and small breadcrumbs of information. Oblivion Remastered‘s surprise release felt very out of character for Bethesda, and a lot of gamers want more of that. There’s no way to know for sure if a Fallout 3 shadow drop is in the cards, but Oblivion Remastered has clearly left some fans hoping that’s the case.
