Bethesda's Todd Howard Says He Is "Sort Of Anti-Remake"

Bethesda’s Todd Howard has come out to say he is “sort of anti-remake” and prefers remasters, like 2025’s popular The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

“I’m sort of anti-remake. I respect the other ones out there, but I really think the age of a game is part of what it is and its personality and what it represented when it came out,” he told Kinda Funny.

Howard said the ambition with Oblivion Remastered was to make “the absolute best version” of the game. “It was important to us that the original game was running, so imagine you had patched that game many, many, many times for many years, what would you have done?” he said, as reported by GamesRadar.

Bethesda worked with Virtuos on Oblivion Remastered, and the game was a big success. Despite being available on Game Pass, Oblivion Remastered finished 2025 as the No. 9 best-selling game in the US.

Howard is saying this amid rumors that Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas remakes or remasters are in the works. He previously said Fallout is the Bethesda series that the company is “doing the most in” currently (including the Fallout TV show), though the majority of developers at Bethesda are now working on The Elder Scrolls 6.

In other news, Howard recently said The Elder Scrolls 6 will return to Bethesda’s classic style after Starfield took a creative detour. In addition to that game, Bethesda has said fans can expect Fallout 5.
