Black Ops 3’s Director Finally Discusses Its ‘Impossible Easter Egg’

Black Ops 3’s Director Finally Discusses Its ‘Impossible Easter Egg’

In this era of rampant data mining, it’s hard to believe that an easter egg could be so complicated to trigger that it’s remained undiscovered for over a decade. Yet, after ten long years, the “Impossible Easter Egg” in Black Ops 3‘s Zombies mode continues to elude fans, and the man who put it there seems keen to keep it that way.

The Impossible Easter Egg, as it’s been dubbed by fans, was teased by Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s executive producer and director, Jason Blundell, during a pre-release interview. According to Blundell, the easter egg was intentionally designed to be convoluted and elaborate because he was “fed up” with people discovering the secrets in previous Black Ops titles so quickly.

Blundell sat down with content creator JCbackfire earlier in the week to discuss his work at Treyarch, and, naturally, the topic of the Impossible Easter Egg came up. While he didn’t outright reveal how to trigger it, he did potentially give us a few clues…in a fittingly cryptic way.

“I thought about two books that I’d read. The first book is by an author called Miyamoto Musashi, it’s called The Book of Five Rings,” Blundell revealed. “And the other book I was thinking about was called Here Be Dragons, which is a physics book about wormholes, and advanced physics, and extraterrestrial life and so forth.”

“I’ve always kind of thought that the idea of ‘wouldn’t it be amazing if there were things there that we couldn’t see, that were always there?’” Blundell continued. “So how do you do an impossible easter egg that could survive forever? My goal being that it would never be found…so I worked pretty much through the night.”

Maybe I’ve just been influenced by all the bizarre Impossible Easter Egg threads I’ve read through during my research, but I can’t help but feel the specific book references are in some way a hint, and not just context that Blundell peppered in to make things sound legit. Either that or Blundell is just psyop-ing the Call of Duty community into finally reading some literature.

That being said, his final comment on the easter egg makes it seem as if Blundell truly never wants it to be uncovered, so perhaps he really isn’t hinting at anything here. “The impossible easter egg—the clue is in the title. It is impossible. Stop looking for it. If you were to get it, it would mean something to you, but everything to me…because I want it to survive after all of us are gone.”
