Call of Duty: Black Ops 7‘s latest cinematic trailer reveals the new Totenreich map for its popular Zombies mode, teasing a continuation of the original storyline. The cooperative survival mode has been a fan-favorite feature of Treyarch’s military shooter titles ever since it first appeared in World at War. In Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, the endless horde mode builds on its formula with an expansive map called Ashes of the Damned, which players explore using a customizable truck named Tessie.
The Dark Aether saga serves as the narrative backdrop for Black Ops 7 Zombies. It’s a direct sequel to the original Aether arc, where soldiers and scientists band together to battle undead outbreaks caused by Element 115. The fate of every Call of Duty Zombies crew usually intertwines with the antagonist Group 935, a secret research organization whose experiments ultimately led to the creation of zombies. Over time, those events escalated into the collapse of the multiverse and reset the timeline for the current saga of the franchise.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Has Biggest Round-Based Zombies Map Ever
Black Ops 7 Zombies mode debuts its biggest round-based map yet, as Survival returns and Cursed mode raises the stakes with Relics and classic rules.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Upcoming Totenreich Map Continues the Original Storyline
A recent cinematic trailer showcases the newest map for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies called Totenreich, set in a familiar Norwegian fishing town. The free content update is scheduled to launch on April 30, 2026, as part of the Season 3 Reloaded content drop for the game. The trailer footage includes the return of the towering robot originally fought in the Origins map in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. However, it seems the robot has met its match against a massive Norse frost giant, with the trailer showing the creature effortlessly punching the machine to the ground. Based on its scale alone, this new enemy may already be shaping up to be one of the best boss fights in Call of Duty Zombies.
In Call of Duty Zombies lore, Totenreich was trapped in time following the failed experiments conducted by Group 935. The location is tied to the playable character Edward Richtofen’s backstory, which explains why he was heavily featured in the cinematic trailer. After dropping another memorable Richtofen quote, he is joined by other members of the Dark Aether crew, including “Tank” Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, and Takeo Masaki, while also fighting alongside the Ex-Requiem crew, comprised of Grigori Weaver, Elizabeth Grey, Mackenzi Carver, and Maya Aguinaldo.
The dramatic reveal of Totenreich highlights how Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies is gearing up to close out storylines it set up years ago. By reintroducing updated versions of Black Ops 7 characters from both the original Aether arc and the current Dark Aether saga, this iteration of the endless horde mode confronts head-on the atrocities committed by Group 935, with Richtofen at the center of the conflict as one of its responsible architects. Hopefully, bringing back a familiar location isn’t purely for the nostalgic effect, but as a narrative turning point meant to hold Richtofen accountable for his actions. Whether the story fully commits to that direction is to be seen, especially as Call of Duty Zombies has historically used humor and banter to deflect from its darker themes.
