Bloodborne’s Best Boss Narrowed Down by Gamers

Bloodborne fans have been starved for some time now, but recent news about an animated film has once again drummed up buzz within the community, especially among fans on a forum like Reddit. Particularly, special attention has been given to the game’s boss roster, which is understandable given that Bloodborne boasts some of the best encounters in any FromSoftware title. But the renewed spotlight does beg a critical question: which Bloodborne boss is the best of the best?

It’s a deeply subjective question, of course, but with so many Bloodborne bosses to choose from, a somewhat objective consensus might be possible through the aggregate. After all, threads ranking, dissecting, and passionately defending individual fights have accumulated thousands of upvotes across r/bloodborne over the years. Taken together, they paint a surprisingly coherent picture of which bosses have truly stood the test of time ahead of any potential cinematic debut in the animated Bloodborne movie.

FromSoftware: Hardest Beast Soulsborne Bosses, Ranked

FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games are known for their difficult boss fights. The following eight animalistic beasts are among their toughest.

Bloodborne Fans Have Been Ranking Bosses for Years

Bloodborne enjoys an extremely devoted online community, and Reddit has long served as a central gathering place for exactly these kinds of debates. Posts dedicated to specific bosses—their mechanics, their lore, the feelings they evoke—regularly surface at the top of the subreddit. With the animated film reigniting interest in the game, those conversations have only grown louder and more spirited in recent weeks.

To narrow things down, recurring Reddit discussions have consistently centered on three names that stand out from the rest: Gehrman the First Hunter, the Orphan of Kos, and Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower. Each represents something distinct about what makes Bloodborne special, and each commands a passionate contingent of fans ready to make its case. What they all have in common, however, is a very solid claim to the crown.

Gehrman, the First Hunter

As the “final” boss of Bloodborne‘s base game, Gehrman is a natural candidate who carries a weight few FromSoftware encounters can match. For one, he’s an aesthetic triple threat, and there are consistently threads dedicated to praise of the encounter’s vibe. One Redditor summed up these elements succinctly: “the arena, the OST, the way Gehrman fights, and of course, why the fight happens.” His role as the original hunter, a mentor figure turned adversary, lends the encounter a tragic resonance that lingers long after the credits roll, and the stylistic approach only reinforces the feeling that fighting Gehrman was the culmination of everything the Bloodborne base game built toward.

On the mechanical side, opinions are a bit more sharply divided: players who master Bloodborne’s parry system, like ZexzeonAce, find him surprisingly manageable — “After you beat the game the first time… He becomes a breeze.” Others, however, hit a wall they struggle to break through even at high levels; one player (who shall remain mercifully anonymous) even admitted to attempting the fight upwards of 70 times at level 112, unable to find a path through no matter what they tried. In this case, that wide range of outcomes speaks to Gehrman as a quality boss encounter, and a serious contender for the title of best Bloodborne boss.

Orphan of Kos

Now, community sentiment may be split on Gehrman’s difficulty, but when it comes to Orphan of Kos, there’s essentially zero debate. As one of the hardest bosses in the entire Soulsborne catalog, Orphan is a capstone fight that absolutely earns its place — Redditor WittyTable4731 put it plainly: “The DLC was a wrecking ball of amazing bosses, and Orphan is a fitting finale.” Orphan is tricky, too, as the first phase is readable enough, with generous parry windows and predictable patterns, but come the second phase, the fight veers into the utterly relentless and genuinely overwhelming.

Any community discussion about Orphan of Kos can be summed up as a sort of call-and-response dynamic, where players vent their frustration, and others respond with tips and tricks. Parrying is considered essential, and careful stamina management is cited as a non-negotiable, but users like Ehh_SmiteMe get a bit more specific, advising against passivity and to stay close, dodging around rather than backing up. Ultimately, for a certain kind of player, this level of punishing difficulty is precisely what makes Orphan the best boss in the game, and that makes the fight worth considering here, especially considering the Souls-like genre is defined by difficulty.

Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower

Lady Maria occupies a uniquely beloved space in the Bloodborne boss conversation; she’s the crowd-pleaser, the fight that nearly everyone agrees is a joy to experience, even when opinions diverge on how hard she actually is. Lady Maria’s backstory is haunting, her arena and soundtrack are among the game’s most sensorially arresting, and, as Redditor amberdesu muses, “She has the sickest drip in all of Bloodborne.” Beyond that, her fight is consistently described as an enjoyable choreographed dance — fluid, elegant, and cinematic in a way few boss encounters achieve.

Mechanically, she skews easier for players who’ve internalized the parry system, making her a highlight rather than a hurdle for most veterans. Her escalating aggression across three distinct phases can still act as a genuine test for those who haven’t, though. Ultimately, whether she tops someone’s list tends to come down to whether they value good design and general spectacle alongside raw challenge.

Honorable Mentions: Ludwig and Martyr Logarius

Bloodborne-ss-083

When it comes to the honorable mentions, no Bloodborne boss discussion is complete without a nod to Ludwig the Accursed/Ludwig, The Holy Blade, and Martyr Logarius. His genuinely challenging two-phase transformation from grotesque horror to tragic knight is among FromSoftware’s finest examples of environmental storytelling, so it’s commonly held that Ludwig is Bloodborne‘s best boss as well. Logarius, meanwhile, may be less universally celebrated, but his patient, punishing pace has earned him a loyal following among players who see him as an underrated gem in the base game’s roster.

Everyone hates a cop out, but trying to pin down a single winner across an entire gaming community is an exercise in acknowledging that Bloodborne simply has no bad answers. Reddit conversations, discussions, and polls lean toward Lady Maria, Gehrman, or Ludwig as the sentimental favorites. Orphan of Kos generally stands alone as the community’s pick for the most difficult boss in Bloodborne.

Regardless, the enduring nature of these conversations is a testament to how well-crafted Bloodborne‘s boss roster truly is. And, with an animated adaptation on the horizon, these discussions are only going to grow as new players discover the game and veterans revisit their favorites. At least if Reddit is any indication, the community will be relitigating the rankings for years to come — and what a wonderful thing that is.
