A gamer purchased a physical copy of Borderlands 4 for the Switch 2 from a third party, despite the game’s port being indefinitely delayed. Despite it being a legitimate copy, the Switch 2 user stated that the version of Borderlands 4 they purchased ended up not having any data to download, preventing any testing from happening.
Ahead of it’s October 2025 launch, Borderlands 4 developer Gearbox Software stated that the Switch 2 version would launch simultaneously with other current-gen platforms. However, just over a week before launch, Gearbox indefinitely delayed the Switch 2 launch of Borderlands 4. The developers stated that the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 needed additional development time before it was in a presentable state. Take-Two, the owners of Borderlands publisher 2K, followed up in February 2026 by explaining that development of Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 was paused to prioritize post-launch content on other platforms. However, 2K noted that other projects would continue to launch on Switch 2.

A Borderlands 4 Game-Key Card Has Been Discovered
Although the Switch 2 port of Borderlands 4 has been delayed indefinitely, that has not stopped some planned physical copies of the game from appearing out in the wild. On the Nintendo Switch subreddit, a Redditor named Veloxplayer098 posted a screenshot of a physical copy of Borderlands 4 they bought from a third-party seller. The seller they bought Borderlands 4 from stated they got it at a flea market, though the claim could not be verified. The Borderlands 4 physical copy in question was for the Italian localization of the game, with a PEGI 18 rating for violence, swearing, and in-game purchases. Copies of Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 were initially stated to be distributed via Game-Key Cards, which would require users to download the game onto their consoles before playing.
While Veloxplayer098 claimed that the Game-Key Card for Borderlands 4 was a legitimate copy, they noted that no data to download Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 was available on the Nintendo eShop. Ergo, the game cannot be played at all on Switch 2, since Borderlands 4 is not available to download from Nintendo’s servers to begin with. In response, other users pointed out that, since Borderlands 4 was issued on a Game-Key Card, the cost to manufacture copies was likely kept low. Considering that the Steam version of Borderlands 4 requires at least 100GB of storage space, the file size on the Switch 2 port would likely exceed the 64GB capacity of a standard Switch 2 Game Card.
Borderlands 4 Still Has Some Lingering Problems
However, other users also stated that getting Borderlands 4 to run on the Switch 2 would be a tall task, considering the lingering issues that Borderlands 4 has on PC. Gearbox stated that, despite working on the game six months after launch, the ongoing PC port issues have been “a little stressful” for the development team to tackle. The developer also said that it would continue to implement changes to improve the game, with player feedback being considered with each patch.

In the meantime, Borderlands 4 players have until April 14 to claim a new SHiFT code for three free Golden Keys. Although Borderlands 4 is unlikely to arrive on the Switch 2 anytime soon, time will tell when Gearbox can make any leeway there.
