A pair of Call of Duty releases have soared past Grand Theft Auto 6 on the PlayStation Store charts. Out of seemingly nowhere, Activision announced plans to re-release two of its most popular Call of Duty games, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The games have been criticized for being expensive for re-releases of titles that are well over a decade old, but that hasn’t stopped them from selling like hotcakes.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is when Treyarch really started to establish its identity in the CoD brand. The game was praised for its twisting narrative and exciting twists on the tried-and-true Call of Duty multiplayer formula, with its Zombies mode also earning a great deal of praise. Black Ops 2 was praised for similar reasons, and both games stand as two of the most well-loved entries in the entire Call of Duty franchise.
Black Ops 1 and 2 Are Ahead of GTA 6 on the PlayStation Store
Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are topping the PlayStation Store charts, even managing to surpass Grand Theft Auto 6 in the process. Grand Theft Auto 6 is perhaps the most highly-anticipated new video game release of all time, and so it’s no surprise that it exploded to the top of sales charts when its pre-orders went live. However, the Call of Duty games actually being available to play has given them the advantage over GTA 6 โ for the time being.

It’s likely that GTA 6 will overtake both the Black Ops re-releases in the near future. Whenever Rockstar decides to release the long-awaited GTA 6 Trailer 3, chances are that will fuel a surge of more pre-orders and help the long-awaited game reclaim its spot at the top of sales charts. When Grand Theft Auto 6 launches later this year, it will almost certainly become the best-selling game of the year almost instantly, and so fans shouldn’t expect the CoD re-releases to stay dominant forever.
Considering the success the Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2 re-releases have enjoyed, one has to wonder if they will come to other platforms. For one reason or another, Activision only released the ports on PS4 and PS5, with no version available for Xbox (despite Xbox owning Activision and Call of Duty) or Switch 2. The lack of Xbox versions of the games can likely be attributed to the fact that the original versions are playable through backward compatibility, but no Switch 2 ports seems like a big missed opportunity. The shot-in-the-arm for the multiplayer servers would be worth it for many fans by itself, so hopefully native Black Ops and Black Ops 2 ports for other platforms are announced sooner rather than later.
The CoD: Black Ops 1 and 2 re-releases lack Wager Matches and don’t come with any major improvements, so it goes to show that there is value bringing older games to newer platforms without going through the effort of remastering. Perhaps other older Call of Duty games will get the port treatment soon, but that remains to be seen.
