Civ 7 ‘Got It Wrong’ As It Ditches Its Most Controversial Mechanic

Civ 7 ‘Got It Wrong’ As It Ditches Its Most Controversial Mechanic

Civilization 7 just announced its Test of Time update, coming May 19. Firaxis is calling it the 4X strategy game’s “most fundamentally game-changing” patch since it launched back in February 2025. One of the major changes it makes is to civilizations. Players will now be able to stick with a single civilization through an entire match rather than being forced to switch at each new age. Switching civilizations was one of the most controversial mechanics added to the long-running franchise, and making it optional is a big milestone yet for Civilization 7 on its post-launch road to redemption.

“By far the most-requested addition, you’ll be able to play as one civ throughout an entire campaign when the Test of Time update goes live,” the development team wrote in a new blog post. “While you’ll still have the option to evolve your empire into a different civilization during Age Transitions, the ability to play as one civ across the span of history is something many players hold dear as a core component of the Civ experience. When playing as these Time-Tested civs, the new Syncretism mechanic will allow you to create all-new builds by adopting the Unique Units or Infrastructure from another civilization that’s currently in its Apex Age, or double-down on what makes your civ unique with Affirmation.”

Civilization 7‘s Steam review rating remains underwater, though Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has been bullish about the “lifetime” value of the newest entry and says the 2025 release remains profitable for its 2K Games publishing label.

“Every time there’s a new Civ, the team at Firaxis thinks about: ‘How do we push the envelope far enough that it makes sense to buy this new game? And how do we preserve what people love enough so that they’re not disaffected?’ And we got it wrong with Civ VII, but it wasn’t for want of trying. And again, I take responsibility for it,” he told Game File in a recent interview. “So we’ve made a bunch of fixes. We’ll continue to make fixes. The game is a really good game. And it’s certainly a profitable enterprise for us. But this is one where I think what we tried to do was a bridge too far, from the consumer’s perspective.”

Civilization 7‘s upcoming Test of Time patch will also rework Victories to reward a greater range of activities and ongoing dominance during a match, while a new Triumph system will replace the game’s existing Legacy Paths to offer more varied and challenging optional objectives during a playthrough. And of course there will be a new map, narrative events, and other additional content that arrive as part of the free update.
