Season 3 Reloaded will add a brand-new round-based Zombies map to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and Treyarch has released the cinematic trailer ahead of launch. This map is called Totenreich, and it’s set within a Norwegian fishing town plagued by the undead. Totenreich is a map that seems to be steeped in the original Zombies lore, as it contains ties to Richtofen, Group 935, and the giant robot from Black Ops 2’s Origins map.
All of the maps in Black Ops 7 take place inside the Dark Aether, which acts like a supernatural Bermuda Triangle and pulls in characters and locations across various worlds and time periods. For this new location, Treyarch has confirmed Totenreich is from the WWII era within Richtofen’s timeline.
This entire Norwegian fishing town has been trapped in time and warped into the Dark Aether following the events of failed experiments by Group 935, which was an organization spearheaded by Doctor Ludvig Maxis and Richtofen in the original Zombies storyline. This organization played a major role in the creation of the undead, development of Wonder Weapons like the Wunderwaffe DG-2, and more.
Visually, the map looks heavily inspired by Call of the Dead from Black Ops 1. Totenreich features a foggy nighttime atmosphere, and it includes a lighthouse reminiscent of the one in Call of the Dead. Totenreich also appears to be home to some of the Origins robots.
One of Treyarch’s earlier teaser clips revealed a robot head inside one of Group 935’s facilities. It’s possible this facility could’ve been the “origins” of the robots or at the very least a facility manufacturing them. Totenreich’s cinematic trailer also showcases one of the robots getting knocked out by a ginormous frost monster, which presumably could be the boss fight for the map. There’s even a final scene with the giant stomping, and it appears to pay homage to the Origin’s robot stomp cimematic featured in Black Ops 2.
Black Ops 7’s Zombies storyline is a continuation of Treyarch’s Dark Aether Saga, which was initially introduced with Black Ops Cold War in 2020. This has been an ongoing sequel to the original Aether storyline, but Totenreich looks to have the potential for the developer to explore more of Richtofen’s character and tie in plenty of lore from the classic storyline.
Season 3 Reloaded will also include more content for multiplayer, Endgame, and Warzone. This midseason update includes new weapons, events, and the return of the Free Run mode from Black Ops 3.
