Cyberpunk 2077 is Getting a Free PS5 Pro Upgrade Tomorrow

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a long-requested PlayStation 5 Pro upgrade on April 8. The free update is both a visual and performance boost for players whoalready own a copy of Cyberpunk 2077. The update takes advantage of the PlayStation 5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology and stronger hardware to improve image quality and overall performance. Cyberpunk 2077 has seen several major updates since launch, and this latest update highlights how developers can continue to take advantage of new console capabilities as they become available to support existing titles.

The visual upgrade uses Sony’s AI-powered PSSR 2 upscaling feature to deliver greater visual quality and performance. Sony announced its PSSR 2 upgrade last month, and several titles, including Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem and Pearl Abyss’ Crimson Desert, have already adopted the technology. The improved PSSR tech is designed to enhance image clarity and stability while maintaining high frame rates. Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City features dense environments, detailed lighting, and numerous reflections, making it a perfect title to utilize the upgraded visual technology.

How to Enable PSSR 2 on PlayStation 5 Pro

PlayStation 5 Pro owners can finally get the 4K clarity that Sony promised at launch by enabling the new PSSR 2 feature via the settings menu.

Night City is Getting an Impressive Upgrade

Kuba Knapik, Global Art Director at CD Projekt Red, provided details about the upcoming visual upgrade. Players will be able to download the Cyberpunk 2077 update on April 8. In addition to leveraging PSSR 2 to improve the overall visual fidelity of the image, developer CD Projekt Red is implementing 8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH8) for improved Ray Tracing.

Ray Tracing makes for better lighting, shadows, and reflections rendered throughout Night City. The developer said the improved technologies will help bring Night City closer to the vision it has always wanted to share with the player. While CD Projekt Red has said no new content is coming for Cyberpunk 2077, it is clear the company still wants to support the title and the players who are still investing time in its world.

In addition to the upgraded visual fidelity, players will be able to choose from three different performance modes. Ray Tracing Pro will include all available Ray Tracing enhancements, such as improved reflections, shadows, and lighting, while targeting 40 FPS on displays with variable refresh rate (VRR) or 30 FPS on other displays. Performance mode will provide the highest possible frame rate. According to the developer, displays that are VRR enabled will be able to reach up to 90 FPS. Ray Tracing mode is the happy middle between the two. It aims to balance higher fidelity visuals and performance. It’ll enable select Ray Tracing features while aiming to hit 60 FPS. It is likely this could be the final big improvement to the game, as CD Projekt Red turns its focus to Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4.

The visual upgrade is a good example of how existing games can evolve alongside new hardware, even years after a game’s initial release. Even without new content, updates like this show how developers can continue to support established titles to deliver improved experiences for both new and existing players, especially as technologies like PSSR become more widely adopted across PlayStation titles.
