Destiny 2 Player Count Causes Server and Login Issues for Final Update

Destiny 2 Player Count Causes Server and Login Issues for Final Update

Destiny 2 fans have seemingly shown up in force for the Monument of Triumph update, with a huge demand at launch putting a big strain on the game’s servers and causing login issues. With the launch of the Monument of Triumph update, the community finds itself in a very bittersweet moment of time as the changes themselves have been praised by players, though it also represents the end of the road for Destiny 2.

While Destiny 2 hasn’t been in a great place for nearly a year, it’s hard to imagine that anyone saw the end coming for the popular online shooter. The announcement that Monument of Triumph would be Destiny 2‘s final live-service content update has left the community with a mix of emotions, ranging from confusion and denial, to anger. Many have taken the opportunity to recall their favorite moments, while developers and voice actors have released videos or written tweets sharing their love for the franchise. However, the community has also rallied to send a message to Sony that they shouldn’t be giving up on this franchise just yet.

Destiny 2 Monument of Triumph Demand Causes Server Issues

While there have been attempts to get Sony’s attention through things like a Destiny 3 petition as well as spamming messages in the PlayStatrion State of Play, the community organized a Destiny 2 server slam of sorts when the final update hit. As it turns out, the plan appears to have been largely successful as Destiny 2 player numbers exploded, pushing numbers on Steam alone that it hasn’t hit in well over a year. Looking at the popularity.report site, which takes into account all platforms, Destiny 2 broke over a million players on June 10, which is quite a feat for a nearly 9-year-old game.

The surge of players to Destiny 2 has also had another effect, essentially causing login and server issues on June 9. Following the launch of the update, many players were seeing error messages attempting to log in, and even those who were able to, were kicked out to due servers breaking under the strain of the players attempting to get in. Bungie quickly made adjustments and things stabilized later that day, with the studio running maintenance on the servers on June 10 to likely clean up other issues as well.

It’s unknown at this point if any of these demonstrations by the community will have an effect on Sony or its decisions on a possible Destiny 3. Either way, there’s no denying that the community has shown up in support of the game and has done so much in an effort to save the franchise. The outpouring of support has even extended to once-rival games like Warframe, which is planning to launch a special and free Alert event on Telesto starting on June 17 where players can earn a unique Honoria cosmetic title called Make Your Own Fate.

While the fate of the Destiny franchise is still very much uncertain, Bungie is seemingly making sure the game goes out with a bang as Monument of Triumph is an extremely large update that not only adds a ton of new content, but makes some very player-friendly quality of life improvements as well. Fans will have plenty to do in the months and years after this update as they attempt to unlock the Immortal title and matching armor set, which will push them to play just about every piece of content and game mode currently in Destiny 2.
