Destiny 2 Players Attempting ‘Server Slam’ To Send a Message to Sony

Prior to the arrival of the final update for Destiny 2, fans are attempting to organize a community server slam in an effort to not only beat Marathon’s all-time concurrent record, but to send a message to Sony. While Destiny 2 has been suffering from a lack of news or updates over the past few months, few would likely have believed that Bungie was preparing an announcement to actually end the game for good.

The announcement that Destiny 2 is getting its final update sent shock waves throughout the community, not just because Bungie previously confirmed at least 2 additional expansions, but it represented the end of a 13-year journey for many players across two games, betas, alphas, and even pre-alphas. Since the announcement, there has been no shortage of tributes, discussions, goodbyes, and more from the community, while others have attempted to stop what feels to be inevitable through petitions and pushback against Sony simply icing the series. One such method is an attempt to send Sony a message through community action.

Former Destiny 2 Director Luke Smith Responds to Final Update News

Former Destiny 2 game director Luke Smith returns to social media to share his thoughts about the game’s final content update on June 9.

Naturally, following the news of Destiny 2‘s end, a lot of anger has been directed at Marathon, with many in the community viewing Bungie’s extraction shooter as the main reason for their favorite game’s downfall. In fact, Marathon has seen an uptick in negative reviews on Steam, another wave of review bombing with many players referencing Destiny 2 and how development seems to have fully shifted here instead of there.

Even with all the negativity, many fans are opting to send a message to Sony through action instead of just words. On the Destiny 2 subReddit, a user named w1nds0r is attempting to organize a community-driven server slam. On June 9, when the final update arrives, the goal is to have as many Destiny 2 players log in as possible, not only in an effort to smash Marathon’s current all-time concurrent player record, but in an effort to send a message to the powers that be they’ve made the wrong decision about the series. Essentially, with a spike in player numbers, the hope is that the community can show Sony that the Destiny franchise is worth continuing to invest in.

So far, the post has seen substantial traction, becoming a hot topic on the Subreddit with over 5,000 upvotes and well over a thousand comments at the time of publication. Comments are all positive on the effort, with the majority agreeing to hop on while many others are venting their frustrations with the current decisions, sharing stories, or discussing excitement for the new content.

The community continues to have hope of making a difference, with a recent Destiny 3 petition gaining significant momentum after racking up over 24,000 signatures in just 7 hours. At the time of publication, the petition has exploded past 250,000 signatures so far and continues to gain traction. It’s unknown if any of this community-driven activism will have any effect, as Bungie’s fate seems pretty set in stone with large-scale layoffs expected to happen after the final Destiny 2 update, with the remaining staff to focus solely on Marathon. As for the future of the Destiny franchise, it seems murky at best, though fans are hoping to provide some sort of change if at all possible.
