Destiny 2 Project Sunrise Officially Available Now Completely For Free

Destiny 2 Project Sunrise Officially Available Now Completely For Free

Destiny 2 Project Sunrise is officially available, and fans can now access vaulted content for free. Destiny 2‘s content vault was one of the biggest issues the game faced in the past few years, and it most likely contributed to its downfall. The idea was to make the game thinner in terms of file size while also easier to constantly update with new content, so Bungie removed most vanilla content from the game with the Beyond Light expansion, giving it a final goodbye in Season of Arrivals during Shadowkeep.

This removed the Red War campaign and multiple locations, such as Io, Titan, Mars, and even older Raids, like The Leviathan and Eater of Worlds. Without Destiny 2‘s Red War campaign, the game essentially lost its onboarding missions that worked well for new players and veterans alike. After that, the new player experience suffered immensely and went through a few iterations, but never quite hit the mark. Community morale also plummeted, as many Guardians didn’t want to lose older content they had paid for and loved, but this didn’t change the outcome. Now, fans can finally access vaulted content again for free.

Destiny 2: Everything Missing From the Game as It Shuts Down Service

As Destiny 2 prepares to stop moving forward, some of its most important campaigns, places, and stories remain locked out of reach.

Destiny 2’s Vaulted Content is Officially Back For Free

Destiny 2 Project Sunrise is a free, fan-made mod that players can download, allowing Guardians to explore old locations vaulted in Beyond Light. The project is available on GitHub and Discord and includes free exploration of Destiny 2‘s official Leviathan Raid, areas from the Red War campaign (including the burned Tower), The Farm, Forsaken’s areas, and much more. The catch is that fans can’t use their characters or make new ones, but rather have to use pre-made Guardians as part of the mod. Furthermore, the mod requires the base game to be playable, and it was made with the help of AI tools for development and documentation purposes, according to the project’s disclaimer.

There is also a legal disclaimer attached, stating that the project is not for profit, doesn’t affect live servers, it’s not a security risk, and doesn’t contain game data that could be subject to copyright violation. The developers also ask not to file DMCA or copyright claims against the project, stating that legal action will be taken against abuse of the copyright system. Destiny 2 went through a copyright infringement lawsuit once, tied to the content vault, so it’s unclear if Bungie would do anything against this project. Fans who want to replay old content can do that with Project Sunrise, though some bugs will be present due to the project’s early release.

It’s also worth noting that the content vault can only be explored at this stage, as enemies, quests, NPCs, and loot are not available. However, the developers and testers for the project would like to eventually reinstate all those elements with community work and via open sourcing. While the live game’s community is still going strong, with 35-40k active players on Steam daily, some have already left for other games. Some Destiny 2 players are now flocking to The Division 2, for example.

The game’s death was and still is shocking to see, and it caused many fans to look for anything that could recreate that sense of belonging within the game or give them a feeling of nostalgia. It’s not surprising that, alongside this project to explore Destiny 2‘s content vault, a Destiny PC port is in development by another fan.
