After launching on June 5, 2023, Diablo 4 players have finally uncovered the secret Cow level, a franchise spanning Easter egg, and its boss fight against The Cow King. There’s a lot of rejuvenated energy currently surrounding the Diablo 4 community as Blizzard just released the latest expansion pack called Lord of Hatred, which continues the game’s main narrative as players work to stop the machinations of Mephisto, one of the three Prime Evils and the Lord of Hatred.
Cow levels in the Diablo franchise have been a long-running gag for the series, originally starting as a rumor in the original game where clicking on a cow in the town of Tristram would open a portal to a secret level. However, the rumor wouldn’t become real until Diablo 2, where players could use The Horadric Cube to transmute Wirt’s Leg and a Tome of Town Portal to open a path to Moo Moo Farm and fight Hell Bovines. The secret level returned as Whimsyshire in Diablo 3, seemingly as a tongue-and-cheek response to initial criticisms that the game was too bright and colorful. Naturally, with Diablo 4 launching in 2023, fans have been eager to discover a new Cow Level, and three years later, the goal has been achieved.

How to Find the Cow Level in Diablo 4
Players have been hot on the trail of solving a new puzzle in Diablo 4, which many were anticipating to be related to the Secret Cow level. With the return of The Horadric Cube in the Lord of Hatred expansion, players had to obtain three different items, each one spanning the length and content of Diablo 4. This includes the Stamina Potion from base Diablo 4, the Rusted Bardiche from Vessel of Hatred, and Neyrelle’s Hand from Lord of Hatred. However, what to do after earning the Torn Page from combining them has left fans puzzled. Finally, after some experimentation, the solution has been found and posted by LoatheBurger for all to see.

After a complex puzzle involving portals representing the days of the week, inscribing Greed on the Holy Cedar Tablet in the Kyovashad Gatehouse, and then murdering cows in the Hecatomb Chamber, a golden portal appears where players will be taken to The Secret Cow Level filled with bipedal Tormented Bovines.
Reaction to the discovery seems to be a bit mixed. While there are plenty who are happy to see the popular Easter egg make its return, many are a bit underwhelmed with the actual content, calling the level empty and boring. However, there is a reason to visit the Cow Level and take on The Cow King. After taking out the hulking cow monster, players can get their hands on another of Diablo 4‘s Ancestral Mythic Unique items, with this one called The Cow King’s Crown. While filled with cow puns, the helm features unique affixes that trigger on the specific day of the week. For example, on Friday, players can get a “Moobility” damage boost while “mooving.”

Interestingly enough, even with a long history of secret cow levels, there was no shortage of mixed messages following the launch of Diablo 4 back in 2023. At launch, former Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson admitted that there wasn’t a secret cow level to find, though many fans didn’t buy the explaination. Players continued to look for clues and, over the next year, they continued to find in-game teases between item descriptions for things like the Rusted Bardiche, Jabbering Gemstone, and others.
