Diablo 5 is set to borrow several ideas from Diablo 2, according to Blizzard officials. Chief among them is the inventory system used in the second mainline Diablo game, featuring more involved item management and equipment progression.
Blizzard officially announced Diablo 5 during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 on September 12. The reveal confirmed that the Lord of Terror will once again play a major role in the series, with a subsequent developer panel offering a few more details on the developer’s approach to the sequel’s gameplay systems.
Diablo 5 Is Bringing Back Several Diablo 2-Style Loot Ideas
Weapons Will Once Again Take Multiple Inventory Slots
During the so-called Forging the Future panel, Blizzard identified depth, clarity, and identity as three guiding principles behind Diablo 5‘s design. One of the clearest examples of that focus is the upcoming game’s inventory system, which allows for a large weapon or armor piece to take up several grid squares, while having smaller items use fewer slots. The approach thus essentially revives the Diablo 2 inventory system in all its space-management glory while leaving behind the one-slot-per-item mechanic used by the second and third mainline entries.
Diablo 5 Currently Planned to Reintroduce Gear Stat Requirements
Blizzard also said it is experimenting with stat requirements for gear, potentially making attributes relevant not only to character builds but also to which items can be equipped. As with multi-slot itemization, this is another idea taken from the Diablo 2 gear system, where many items require minimum Strength or Dexterity values before they can be used. The original Diablo worked similarly, while Diablo 3 and 4 dropped the approach in favor of more straightforward gear progression with fewer equipment restrictions and thus potential blockers. Blizzard has not said how restrictive the mechanic could be in Diablo 5 and noted that it remains experimental, meaning it could still change substantially or be abandoned altogether over the course of development.

The similarities extend beyond those systems. Blizzard also outlined increasingly complex item tiers, belts, and the return of equipment-based sets. The latter is notable after Diablo 4 took a different approach with set Charms, Talismans, and set bonuses, separating the mechanic from equipped gear. Diablo 5 is also looking backward with Runes, with Blizzard saying its current crafting plans include “Diablo 2-style Runes and Runewords.” As a reminder, the second mainline entry in the ARPG series allows players to create Runewords with additional properties by placing specific runes into compatible socketed gear in the correct order. While inherently more complicated, the system is also potentially more engaging and rewarding by making both the base item and the runes crucial components of gearing.
Diablo 5 is currently targeting a spring 2029 release. Blizzard did not confirm any platforms during its BlizzCon 2026 reveal or subsequent panels. PC remains the most likely destination based on the studio’s track record and the series’ history, while PlayStation and Xbox versions also appear likely. However, it remains unclear which console generations will receive the demon-hunting ARPG.
