A Nintendo Switch game is permanently shutting down on March 23, 2027, with players losing access to it after more than five years. The Nintendo Switch has built up an enormous library since launching in 2017, with thousands of games spanning nearly every genre. While most of these games can be played whenever someone wants, others depend entirely on online servers. Unfortunately, when those servers shut down, there’s often very little players can do to keep enjoying their games.

This has become an increasingly common problem for online multiplayer games, particularly free-to-play releases that receive regular updates. Even major franchises like Pokemon aren’t immune, with several Nintendo Switch games relying on online functionality for important parts of their experience. In some cases, a game can continue working with fewer features after its servers close, but others become completely unplayable. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening with one of the Nintendo Switch’s biggest Pokemon spin-offs, although there is some good news for players who want to preserve their progress.

Pokemon Unite is Shutting Down in 2027 for Nintendo Switch and Mobile Devices

The Pokemon Company has confirmed that Pokemon Unite will permanently shut down on March 23, 2027. The announcement applies to both Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. Once the servers go offline, players will no longer be able to log in or participate in battles. Originally released in July 2021, Pokemon Unite is a free-to-play MOBA that pits two teams of five Pokemon against one another. The game has received years of updates, introducing new playable Pokemon, modes, events, and cosmetics.

However, Pokemon Unite is getting one final major update before the shutdown on November 12. The update introduces special missions, login bonuses, and a Unite Coin Exchange, allowing players to obtain previously released items. These include Unite licenses, Holowear, and other rewards. Most importantly, the update also adds a Library feature that preserves certain records, achievements, and collectibles after the servers shut down. Players will need to download the required data before March 23 to continue accessing this content (although the actual game will no longer be playable).

There are a few other important dates for Pokemon Unite players to keep in mind. Sales of Aeos gems ended October 27, although previously purchased gems can still be used until the shutdown. New Unite Club memberships and automatic renewals have also been discontinued. Meanwhile, the Pokemon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo tournament is still moving forward, with qualifiers beginning December 5. It will be among the game’s final major competitive events.

The shutdown of Pokemon Unite is another reminder of how difficult it can be to preserve online-only games. While Nintendo Switch players will lose access to battles and regular gameplay, the Library feature at least offers a way to revisit some of their accomplishments. However, players will need to prepare for that before the servers close, as the required data won’t be available indefinitely.
