Don’t Worry About The Blood of Dawnwalker’s 30-Day Time Limit

Don’t Worry About The Blood of Dawnwalker’s 30-Day Time Limit

The Blood of Dawnwalker famously features an in-game time limit tied to saving protagonist Coen’s family from the vampire overlord Brencis, but anyone who is turned off by the idea of a time limit shouldn’t necessarily worry about it all that much. It does not work the way most folks think when they hear “time limit.” Truthfully, the way it approaches time is true to the definition of the word “innovative,” and it is Blood of Dawnwalker‘s innovation that kickstarts the upcoming video game release season of September, October, and so forth.

Indeed, The Blood of Dawnwalker releases on September 3 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S consoles, marking the first major release of the month. While it is coming from a new studio, it’s easy enough to call it a “major” release when studio Rebel Wolves’ developers largely came from Witcher 3 dev CD Projekt Red. TBOD is the studio’s first release, but it is an incredibly interesting open-world RPG. In it, players are Coen, who is human by day and vampire by night, who is attempting to rescue their kidnapped family from a Vampire Overlord and his underlings, all in a 30-day time limit.

GameRant plays several hours of The Blood of Dawnwalker, the narrative sandbox RPG from former The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk devs.

Blood of Dawnwalker’s Time Limit Only Determines if Coen’s Family Lives or Dies

What’s cool about this time limit is it only applies to saving Coen’s family and does not result in a game over or ending for Blood of Dawnwalker. In fact, as soon as players take control of Coen, they can head straight to Brencis’ castle to rescue their family, challenging the final boss within the first hour or so of the game. And if they do not rescue the family in the 30-day time limit, which progresses between days and nights using time as a resource, it does not end the game. Instead, it unlocks new content. Recently speaking to IGN, creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz said,

“The game doesn’t end when you run out of time…I really hope some people will play it and let time run out. I think it’s very interesting, you get some content that you don’t get otherwise if you play this way.”

Instead of thinking of the time limit as a, well, limit like Persona’s calendar system, it’s better to think of it as an answer to every open-world game’s biggest flaw: urgency. By nature, open-world games’ big world-ending threat feels like less of a one because it is always stagnantly waiting on the player to do the quest whenever they are ready. Skyrim is a prime example because the world-ending threat of Alduin will gladly wait for players to become the Guild Master of the Thieves’ Guild first. Brencis does not wait on the player like Alduin and will kill their family at the destined time, changing the ultimate story direction.

That time pressure and urgency does not apply to every aspect of the open-world game, however, so fans do have some much-needed breathing room. Each of the 30 days/nights has eight time segments, with certain quest objectives consuming those segments and showing real-time progression throughout the day/night. Actions that use a segment have an hourglass icon, and between those actions, players can explore to their heart’s content.

Some complaints about its time limit have existed since the initial reveal, likely because of this misunderstanding. Blood of Dawnwalker‘s time limit does not work the same way as many would assume, and based on its broad description, it’s an exciting feature that adds much-needed pressure to the open-world genre—pressure makes diamonds, after all.
