Don't Worry About The Infamous Roar Bug in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch

While Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are mostly simple ports to Nintendo’s beloved Switch consoles, several simple changes have been made to the games—including the infamous Roar bug. For example, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players unlock the necessary tickets to catch Ho-Oh, Lugia, and Deoxys upon defeating the Elite Four and entering the Hall of Fame.

Such changes have only been made to the player’s benefit, at that. It would make some sense for Game Freak to patch the Nugget exploit in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, which can make the players extremely rich with just a little bit of repeat grinding, but the company did not. It still works on Nintendo Switch, truly making these the ultimate ways to play the classic games. Of course, some fans going into Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were concerned about the Roar bug, but they don’t have to be.

No doubt, several newcomers have heard about the Roar bug, as many veterans have bemoaned it at every turn. Essentially, after meeting certain conditions, players have a chance at catching either Entei or Raikou in the endgame of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Original FR/LG players, unfortunately, had a high chance of failing these encounters, as a bug would cause an Entei or Raikou who used Roar (thus ending the battle) to disappear permanently. Many in-the-know players opted to save the Master Ball in Pokemon FireRed or LeafGreen for these encounters, as otherwise they could potentially lose the Legendary Pokemon forever.

However, it has been confirmed in the days since the release that this bug has been fixed. This not only allows players to save that precious Master Ball for other Legendaries/Mythicals in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, but also allows them to encounter these Pokemon without a huge chance of failure.

Which Legendary Beast Spawns for You in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen?

The roaming Legendary Beasts in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are determined by which Starter you chose at the start of the game. If someone chooses Charmander, then their encounter with Suicune was never subject to this bug because it does not roar. However, Bulbasaur players would encounter Entei and Squirtle players would encounter Raikou—the legendary beasts subjected to this bug.

How to Unlock the Legendary Beasts in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

Unlike the original Game Boy releases, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players can unlock and travel to the Sevii Islands. Players can visit the first three before challenging the Elite Four, but the other four require players to defeat the Champion and catch at least 60 Pokemon. Doing so unlocks a post-game quest on the remaining four Sevii islands involving the Ruby and Sapphire key items. Resolving this Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen post-game storyline and defeating Team Rocket, they will be able to encounter the Legendary beasts, as well as Mewtwo.

The easiest way to catch Entei or Raikou is to use the Repel Method. In short, players will want to go to any Route with grass and use a Max Repel, while having a Pokemon between Level 40 and level 49 in the lead spot. This prevents weaker Pokemon from spawning and only lets high-level Pokemon, like the Level 50 Entei or Raikou, spawn. If players don’t get an encounter, they can change areas to randomize its location again and retry. Pallet Town and Route 1 are ideal for the distance and ability to quickly randomize the Legendary Beast. And now, players can do this without worrying about losing Entei or Raikou forever.
