Echoes of Aincrad’s Death Game Mode Explained

Echoes of Aincrad’s Death Game Mode Explained

Sword Art Online returns with Echoes of Aincrad, a medieval fantasy RPG framed within SOA‘s unique, Matrix-like premise. Like the other games in the series, Echoes of Aincrad is a game within a game: the player’s avatar, every NPC, and the setting of Aincrad itself are parts of an advanced MMORPG in the context of the game world. This means that, per Sword Art Online tradition, if someone dies in the game, they die in real life.

This tension, coupled with the inherent creative flexibility of the game within a game premise, is what carries Sword Art Online, and developer Game Studio Inc. hopes to elevate these facets in Echoes of Aincrad. The upcoming game allows players to create their own character and shape them in whatever way they see fit, focusing on endurance, speed, defense, and the like. In this way, it’s a typical action-oriented JRPG, although early impressions peg Aincrad as notably more focused on build-crafting than its predecessors. It’s also looking a lot more ambitious and, for better or worse, considerably tougher—something that is only intensified by the recently revealed Death Game mode, which cranks up the stakes by several orders of magnitude.

Echoes of Aincrad is intended to be a good starting point for Sword Art Online newcomers, primarily because it takes place near the start of the broader series story. This may also explain why the game’s title omits the series’ name.

If you loved Sword Art Online, there’s a whole world of anime waiting for you to discover. Here are some excellent shows for SAO fans.

Echoes of Aincrad’s Death Game Mode Injects Traditional Sword Art Online Gameplay with Permadeath

In an interview with Japanese outlet Denfaminicogamer, Sword Art Online producer Yosuke Futami detailed Echoes of Aincrad’s Death Game mode. If a player chooses to start the campaign with the Death Game option active, then their save file will be permanently deleted upon death. Futami made it clear that there is no way to duplicate the save file in question, meaning that all content has the potential to be irretrievably lost.

Interestingly, Death Game is not simply the max difficulty option of Echoes of Aincrad, as is often the case when games have permadeath modes. Rather, Death Game can be added to one of the game’s four difficulty options:

  • Story
  • Normal
  • Hard
  • Very Hard

This should add an interesting dimension to permadeath runs, making them either more or less accessible, depending on the player’s preference. For instance, if someone wants the tension of permadeath but still feels like they need a little breathing room with Aincrad‘s combat system, they can select the Death Game option on Story difficulty. That said, Futami notes that Death Game is intended for a second playthrough, as some enemies can be extremely tricky, particularly for first-time players.

Death Game Will Meaningfully Elevate Echoes of Aincrad’s Story

The basic premise of Sword Art Online is simple: in the 2020s, a massive corporation releases a virtual reality MMORPG played with a NerveGear, a helmet that jacks directly into the player’s brain and grants them full sensory immersion. But eventually, the game’s creator locks thousands of players into their NerveGear helmets, telling them that they must climb to the top of Aincrad to be set free. The NerveGear is also the reason why dying in the game means dying in real life.

Given this broad-strokes narrative concept, a permadeath mode seems like an obvious fit for any Sword Art Online game, especially one meant to attract new players to the IP. After all, the story of Sword Art Online is rooted in the idea of permadeath, although the consequences for this are naturally stronger in the SOA universe—at least I hope so; Echoes of Aincrad hasn’t revealed that level of permadeath yet.
