Every Officially Confirmed Lore Change In Marvel’s Wolverine

Insomniac Games is setting out to tell a new Marvel Comics story with Marvel’s Wolverine, and that also means that the developer has made a few surprising lore changes that longtime fans probably aren’t expecting. Like the developer’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series, Marvel’s Wolverine shows a fresh side of Logan that isn’t the traditional Earth-616 comic canon.

That doesn’t mean that Marvel’s Wolverine‘s story is a complete rework, though. Logan’s core personality and many supporting characters will remain intact. Marvel’s Wolverine‘s release date is right around the corner, and Insomniac Games has confirmed several compelling lore changes that players should expect.

The X-Men Don’t Exist Yet

Charles Xavier Who?

This is one of the biggest and most surprising changes to the usual Marvel Comics lore. Charles Xavier hasn’t yet founded the group known as the X-Men, so many staple characters fans are used to won’t be present in the story. There’s always the chance that surprise cameos could be in store for players, but that remains to be seen.

Wolverine: Every Marvel Character Officially Confirmed (So Far)

Get ready for the September release of Marvel’s Wolverine with a look at every confirmed character so far, from Wolverine to Jean Grey and Sabretooth.

Other Wolverine-led games from the past, like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, have pushed the X-Men aside and left them out of the spotlight, but Insomniac Games is taking things a step further by completely writing them out of existence. In Marvel’s Wolverine, the world Logan finds himself in is darker and more dangerous for mutants, so there aren’t any safe havens like Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

The X-Men comics are some of the most popular that Marvel has to offer, so Insomniac Games sidelining the beloved team is a bold move. That kind of boldness could pave the way for quite an exciting story, though.

Team X Isn’t the Black Ops Force That It Is in the Comics

Move Over, X-Men, Team X Is Here

Marvel’s Wolverine won’t be completely void of a mutant-led team, and Insomniac Games is remixing Team X’s role. In the comics, Team X is traditionally seen as a secret black ops group run by the CIA that brainwashes mutants to do the government’s bidding and assassinate targets.

This time around, Team X is an underground group that works to save mutants from dangers like experimentation and kidnapping. Although this sounds an awful lot like the X-Men, it isn’t. Team X is made up of characters like Mystique and Sabretooth, so this lineup potentially has looser morals than Xavier’s mutant team.

Team X fills the hole left by the X-Men’s absence, but it also opens the door for Marvel’s Wolverine‘s story to explore some interesting moral gray areas. Staple lore points like Wolverine and Sabretooth’s relationship will get to be seen in a new light, too.

Practically Nowhere Is Safe for a Mutant

Mutant-Kind Still Lives on the Fringes

In Marvel’s Wolverine, the general population hasn’t really learned about mutants yet, so most of them are living in fear. The X-Men comics have always explored themes of being an outsider and the conflict that can arise between mutants and humans. Insomniac Games is diving even deeper into what it means to be an outsider with its interpretation.

Since Charles Xavier is nowhere to kickstart the movement for peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans, the former are still fighting to survive. Team X’s rescue missions are one of the few things that are keeping mutant-kind alive, but they are far away from a life of peace at this point.

As the story progresses, it will be interesting to see if Logan and the rest of Team X are able to make a better life for mutants possible. That depends on just how dark Insomniac’s world turns out to be, though.

Jean Grey Will Be Joining the X-Men Much Later in Life

That Is, if the X-Men Ever Even Form

Jean Grey was only 18 years old when she first joined the X-Men in the original comics. She’s a full-grown adult in Marvel’s Wolverine, and that could prove to be a fascinating shake-up if the X-Men ever form in Insomniac’s universe. At 18, Jean was still growing into her powers, but Marvel’s Wolverine‘s version of Jean Grey already looks like she knows how to handle her dangerous abilities quite well.

If a game starring the X-Men is on the cards, Jean Grey sharpening her powers without Charles Xavier’s mentorship would be a huge lore deviation. It could also make way for a huge dynamic shift in a full-blown X-Men story.

Back in 2023, when the Insomniac leaks hit the internet, details hinted at a potential X-Men game. Of course, since Insomniac hasn’t officially announced such a project, there is always the chance this was simply an idea that never actually entered production. However, it’s going to be fascinating to find out if Marvel’s Wolverine‘s ending lays the groundwork for a larger X-Men story.

Bolivar Trask and Nathaniel Essex Take on Fresh Roles

A Billionaire and an Underground Mutant Leader Walk Into a Bar…

When it comes to Bolivar Trask, this notable X-Men villain is still a dangerous antagonist, but he’s had some slight tweaks. Instead of a government-funded defense contractor, he’s now a wealthy billionaire with a tech empire. If you were hoping for Trask to use his billions to fund mutant-positive efforts around the world, I have some bad news for you.

Insomniac’s take on Trask turns him into a truly terrifying antagonist. He’s always been a compelling villain, but this version of Trask has the funds to hire a cybernetic militia to hunt down mutants.

5 Ridiculous Things About Wolverine’s Family Only Super Fans Will Know

Wolverine’s family in the Marvel Comics is steeped in tragedy. An inception of clones, sons, daughters, and bloody feuds with brothers.

Nathaniel Essex is getting even bigger changes in Marvel’s Wolverine. He isn’t the evil Mr. Sinister that he’s known as in the comics (at least not yet). Essex is the leader of Team X and Logan’s trusted mentor. That’s a far cry from how he’s usually portrayed in the comics, so it’s surely going to be fascinating to see where that story arc leads.

The Weapon X Project Isn’t in the Spotlight

Logan’s Origin Story Plays a Smaller Role

After knowing Insomniac’s track record with the Marvel’s Spider-Man games, glossing over the Weapon X storyline isn’t that surprising. Just like Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben being killed, Wolverine’s time in the Weapon X program is a story that most fans are already familiar with.

Insomniac could always showcase a few Weapon X moments via flashbacks, but that remains to be seen. The Weapon X program is a huge part of Logan’s history, though, so it’s unlikely that this part of his identity will be left out completely.

There are still a lot of mysteries surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine, so it’s exciting that the wait is finally almost over. Insomniac Games is taking several big risks with the game’s lore shake-ups, and it could make for one of the most compelling Logan stories yet.
