Actor Charlie Cox, who voices Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has finally played the celebrated game, but he’s admitted he’s not very good at it.
Speaking to GamesRadar, Cox said he’s played “a bit of it,” but mostly just the beginning of the popular game. “I’ve played the opening bit for a while and kind of walked around and met the people and garnered the information and all that kind of stuff. Not very well. I’m not very good,” he said.
The Daredevil actor also reflected on what it felt like to play a character he himself performed. “It didn’t really feel like me … I didn’t really think of it as me, I thought of it as Gustave,” he said.
Cox has previously said he isn’t a gamer, and in July 2025, he said he still hadn’t played Expedition 33 but wanted to–he just needed to get a console first.
Expedition 33 won the most Game of the Year awards for any game ever, surpassing Elden Ring’s record. Expedition 33 was also GameSpot’s Game of the Year for 2025.
While Cox voiced Gustave, the motion-capture performance was done by Maxence Cazorla. Cox was nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards, but said he didn’t deserve the full credit. Cazorla said it would be “more logical” to have a Best Character category at awards shows to help give credit to everyone who contributed to bringing a character to life in a game.
Expedition 33 was developed by Sandfall Interactive, and it was the studio’s first game. Many are wondering what the studio will make next, and it could be Expedition 33 2, but that remains to be seen.
