Fighting Souls Reveals New Episode Mode Details

In a new interview, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls producer Takeshi Yamanaka reveals new details about the game’s Episode Mode, including how long it’ll take players to experience. There’s a lot of excitement around the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls community at the moment as the game is fresh off announcing its latest two characters, with speculation swirling over the potential appearance of Carnage as part of Dr. Doom’s villain team.

With its August launch date rapidly approaching, the marketing machine for Marvel Tokon has really ramped up as of late. Earlier this month, Arc System Works revealed the Fighting Avengers team for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, the third team of 5 to be available at launch. While three members of the team, Hulk, Captain America, and Iron Man, are traditional Avengers picks, Arc threw a curveball for the fourth member, adding Shuri’s version of Black Panther. The move shouldn’t be too surprising, as Arc System Works has opted to include some unique characters into the fighting game like Danger and Peni Parker.

Marvel Tokon’s Episode Mode May Be Divisive

Even with two teams still left to fully reveal, fans have wondered about what sort of game modes will be available in the game at launch. Arc System Works previously mentioned a single-player Episode Mode for Marvel Tokon during the Unbreakable X-Men reveal, but at the time, details were limited. At the time, it was confirmed that the mode would serve as a collaboration between ArcSys and Marvel Comics to blend American Comics and Japanese Manga to tell the game’s story. Based on new information, the mode may be less interactive than many players likely believed.

In a recent interview, Takeshi Yamanaka spoke more about Episode Mode and the thought of trying to approach the concept of a traditional campaign in a different way. Yamanaka confirmed that Episode Mode will be telling its story through motion comics. Using manga as the base, the team then added movement to each panel to help advance the story. With 5 teams currently in the game, Episode Mode has about 10 hours worth of story content for players to get through. However, the majority of the mode is based around watching the comic, as it was designed around the idea of the player actually reading a comic book. Initially it was indicated there would be no interactive elements, but the interview was recently updated to indicate that there would be playable battles at certain points.

Ultimately, the inclusion of a lengthy story mode shouldn’t be too surprising as Arc System Works has done this before. In fact, Guilty Gear Strive also has a Story Mode that is essentially a lengthy movie without interactive fights. Granted, Strive also has a wealth of other gameplay options and modes to pick from, but it’s a nice optional inclusion for fans who want to dive a bit deeper into that side of the Guilty Gear Universe.

As of right now, Arc System Works hasn’t delved too deep into what game modes will be available at launch for Marvel Tokon. Back in February, new details seemingly leaked early on Steam, which have since been removed or hidden. At the time, it revealed some details which have since been confirmed, like the launch roster size being 20 characters. The Marvel Tokon leak also revealed 64 player lobbies, PC player features like Ultra settings, and standard versus modes and local multiplayer options, as well as the previously mentioned Episode Mode.
