Final Fantasy: Blackmoon Prophecy Remake is Playable Now Completely Free of Charge

Final Fantasy: Blackmoon Prophecy Remake is Playable Now Completely Free of Charge

Final Fantasy: Blackmoon Prophecy Remake, a massive fan-made RPG inspired by Square Enix’s classic series, is available to download and play completely for free on PC. While not affiliated with Square Enix, the unofficial project takes heavy inspiration from the classic 2D era of Final Fantasy, particularly entries like FF4 and FF6.

Blackmoon Prophecy itself has a surprisingly long history, dating back over two decades. Creator UPRC first began developing the original game in 2003 using RPG Maker 2003 before completing it in 2011. The story follows dragoon Vahn Vainstrong after he is sent to investigate trouble surrounding the Kingdom of Branch’s Crystal of Water before becoming caught up in a much larger threat to the world of Gaia. A sequel followed in 2017, but instead of making a third game, UPRC eventually returned to the first adventure and rebuilt it from the ground up using RPG Maker MV between 2025 and 2026. Rather than simply updating the visuals, the remake introduces changes so substantial that its creator considers it a separate continuity from the original games, similar to how the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy handles its canon.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake Gets Disappointing Update

A new Final Fantasy 9 remake report delivers disappointing news for fans who have spent years waiting for Square Enix to reveal the project.

Final Fantasy: Blackmoon Prophecy Remake Expands on the Original Fan Game

The finished Final Fantasy: Blackmoon Prophecy Remake has officially launched and can now be downloaded for free on itch.io for Windows PCs. UPRC’s reimagining of the game features 22 playable characters and six additional guest characters, with the roster drawing from a wide variety of classes inspired by the Final Fantasy job system. The solo developer estimates that an average playthrough should last more than 50 hours, while players attempting to see everything could spend over 60 hours with Blackmoon Prophecy. There are also four overworld maps, 99 window skins, new locations, additional characters, and substantial changes to the original story, leading UPRC to claim that the remake is in a separate “canon” distinct from the first two games.

Additionally, UPRC has packed plenty of optional content into the Blackmoon Prophecy Remake. Players can tackle a 100-battle challenge at the Gygas Arena, participate in a Moogle-themed hide-and-seek minigame, or gamble gil at the Rotunda of Revelry. The developer also included a legacy version designed for older PCs that disables more demanding visual effects, such as Mode 7, lighting, environmental fog, and certain battle transitions. Post-launch support has proceeded swiftly, with the project already updated to version 1.12 as of August 13.

It also appears that the Final Fantasy: Blackmoon Prophecy Remake is reaching a much larger audience than its creator anticipated. UPRC says the game received as many downloads and page views in a 10-day period as they originally expected to accumulate over roughly a year and a half to two years following launch. The unexpected fan response suggests that there could be considerable enthusiasm for new games modeled after the traditional Final Fantasy formula as the series shifts toward a more action-oriented style. For players who prefer large parties, distinct character classes, and classic turn-based RPG design, Blackmoon Prophecy Remake offers a substantial package without an upfront cost.

Next Year Will Officially Be the End of an Era for Pokemon Fans

Fans shouldn’t necessarily expect its success to result in another remake, however. UPRC has stated that there are no plans to remake Blackmoon Prophecy 2, as the new version of the first game’s story diverges enough that events in the original sequel are no longer compatible with it. The developer has also indicated plans to move away from fan games in favor of an entirely original project after completing both Blackmoon Prophecy games and the newly released remake. That could make this remake the culmination of a fan project that began all the way back in 2003, giving classic Final Fantasy fans a full-length RPG they can experience with no barrier to entry while Square Enix works on what’s next for the franchise.
