Bond themes can be hit or miss, as their overwrought cheesy gravitas can easily fall into schlocky power ballad territory. However, Lana Del Rey is up to bat this time for the upcoming 007: First Light game, and who better to perform a song for a James Bond game than the woman who famously crooned, “Swinging in the backyard, pull up in your fast car, whistling my name. Open up a beer and you say, ‘get over here and play a video game’”?
Del Rey’s new song “First Light” will accompany the game when it launches on May 27, but we’ve known this was likely going to be the case for several months, as the “Norman Fucking Rockwell” singer registered a song of that title with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers back in October. Del Rey’s music tends to have a sexy, sultry air to it, which makes her a pretty great fit for a Bond theme. “First Light” definitely has a mysterious, lilting tone in the beginning before the orchestra kicks in and it goes full spy action score. It immediately brings images to mind of James Bond doing sick spy shit with a beautiful bombshell by his side. It also has extremely corny lyrics that seem to be nods to the fact that First Light is a video game rather than a movie, while also simultaneously goading the listener into buying and playing this Bond origin story?

While the PC, PS5, and Xbox versions of First Light are coming late next month, the Switch 2 version was recently delayed until this summer. It sounds like Nintendo’s system is still lagging behind on some big third-party ports despite its increase in power from the 2017 original.
