Rockstar Games has confirmed that those that own Grand Theft Auto 5 on PS4 or Xbox One will be able to claim a free download starting June 18. Grand Theft Auto 5 was first released in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360 before eventually making its way to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. GTA 5‘s journey didn’t end there, though.
With the ongoing popularity of Grand Theft Auto Online, Rockstar Games was incentivized to bring GTA 5 to the latest consoles, and so PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades were released in 2022. The Expanded & Enhanced version of GTA 5 features significant technical improvements and performance upgrades, but it has always come at a premium price – even for those that own older versions of the game. Luckily, that’s about to change.
GTA 6 Marketing Spotted in the Wild
A fan spots an ad for Rockstar Games’ upcoming GTA 6 in an unlikely place ahead of the game’s upcoming summer marketing push.
GTA 5 Free Upgrade Confirmed for June 18
Rockstar Games has confirmed that those that own any version of GTA 5 on PS4 or the digital version on Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version on June 18 at no additional cost. Effectively, this means that millions of gamers will be able to get a free GTA 5 download, as long as they own the older versions of the game. This free upgrade comes about a month before Rockstar Games will release the Kortz Center Heist update for GTA Online, so fans will have multiple reasons to dive back into the game. Those that have yet to play the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S versions of GTA 5 can expect better performance across the board, plus they can migrate their Story and Online progress.
The Kortz Center Heist update is expected to be one of the final major updates for GTA Online ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19, 2026. Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive has previously said that GTA 6 marketing will ramp up this summer, so chances are that the game will start getting promoted aggressively following the July GTA Online update, though there’s always a chance that more information will come earlier than expected.
Despite many GTA 6 Trailer 3 fan theories, it’s been a struggle to predict when exactly Rockstar Games is going to share more information on the game. The first GTA 6 trailer dropped two years ago, and the second one is over a year old at this point. There’s still a ton left to reveal about the game, so fans can expect a gameplay deep dive and a showcase for the inevitable online multiplayer mode, beyond Trailer 3.
The first two GTA 6 trailers focused exclusively on the single-player component, specifically the story, and so basically everything else about the game is still being kept secret. Assuming GTA 6 will meet its announced release date and there won’t be any further delays, reveals about the game should start happening sooner rather than later. To help tide themselves over, GTA fans can snag the free upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game on June 18 and relive GTA 5‘s story and multiplayer.
