GTA 6 Sounds Like It Won’t Be 60FPS At Launch

Today’s Grand Theft Auto 6 deep dive looked incredible, showing off gameplay captured on a base PlayStation 5. Will there be an option to toggle the resolution down in exchange for a higher framerate? According to Rockstar Games, not at launch.

Head of development Rob Nelson reportedly told YouTuber Davy Jones, one of the content creators who recently visited Rockstar North to get a closer look at the game, that GTA 6 is currently only running at 30fps on console during development. Flow Games reports that the performance range could change in the future, including after launch, and Nelson said he couldn’t commit to any other specifics on resolution yet.

Here’s the full excerpt from Flow Games, machine-translated from the Portuguese:

According to Rob Nelson, Lead Developer and Co-director at Rockstar North, during this development period, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second.

According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60 FPS option at launch (or in the future). He also emphasizes that he does not currently have details on resolution and other technical qualities, such as the use of Ray Tracing, but the performance, for now, is 30 FPS.

GTA 6 only having a 30FPS mode at launch would be in keeping with Rockstar’s past open-world games. GTA 5 didn’t get the 60FPS option until the next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Red Dead Redemption 2 still doesn’t have an official 60FPS upgrade for modern consoles.

We also don’t have any sense of whether GTA 6 might have more options on the PS5 Pro. Even if 60FPS remains out of the question, maybe owners of Sony’s premium $900 hardware can squeak out 40FPS mode for 120hz TVs? If not, there’s always the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix coming in just a couple of years.

A 30FPS cap wouldn’t apply to a PC version of GTA 6, but that port, still unannounced, isn’t coming until later down the road. PC owners had to wait nearly 18 months for GTA 5 to hit Steam. Hopefully, the port arrives quicker this time around.
