Highguard Could Add Horse Racing In The Future

Highguard Could Add Horse Racing In The Future

One part of the newly released free-to-play shooter Highguard that sets it apart from other shooters is how the game gives players a variety of mounts to ride to get across the maps faster. One of the main mounts is a horse, and developer Wildlight is considering expanding the game’s elements to include horse racing.

Right now, it’s just an idea and not in development. But game director Chad Grenier told Polygon the idea to add horse-racing has been “floating around at the studio.”

“I mean, the possibilities are endless,” he said of how Wildlight could expand the gameplay for mounts.

Mounts in Highguard not only allow players to get places faster, but they also absorb fall damage, thereby allowing players to jump from high points and survive. Players can also fire their weapons while riding a mount. The game’s maps have “speed gates” as well, and these grant players extra speed when passing through them on a mount. Mounts take damage, too, and can be wiped out completely, forcing players to stay on foot until they unlock enough power to get another one.

Beyond horses, Highguard offers bears and panthers as mounts. Check out the video above to get a closer look at how mounts work in Highguard.

The game launched on January 26 and reached nearly 100,000 peak concurrent players on Steam that day. The developers have said they don’t need the game to achieve “super huge” numbers to be a success, and the team already has a year’s worth of new content mapped out.
