How Final Fantasy 14’s 7.5 Update Lays the Groundwork for Evercold & the 8.0 Update

How Final Fantasy 14’s 7.5 Update Lays the Groundwork for Evercold & the 8.0 Update

Final Fantasy 14 has officially revealed Evercold, the sixth expansion pack of the critically acclaimed MMORPG. The Warrior of Light and Scions of the Seventh Dawn will be heading to the Fourth Reflection, a beautiful world threatened by a terrible calamity of frost. Though there is still much to discover about this upcoming expansion, Final Fantasy 14 players can safely mark early January 2027 on their calendars as Evercold’s release window.

Historically, there have been about 2 years between Final Fantasy 14 expansions, though that has increased over time. Endwalker and Dawntrail each came out about two and a half years after their predecessors, and Evercold is following that precedent. The wait may be agonizing, but this extra time will give Final Fantasy 14 more time to prepare for the expansion—and Patch 7.5 is laying the foundation in several significant ways.

Final Fantasy 14 Is Crossing Over With Neon Genesis Evangelion

Square Enix announces a Final Fantasy 14 crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion as part of the MMORPG’s next major expansion.

FF14 Patch 7.5 – The Bridge Between Dawntrail and Evercold

Navigating the Narrative of Final Fantasy 14: Evercold’s Waiting Room

Patch 7.5 of Final Fantasy 14, titled Trail to the Heavens, released its first part on April 28. However, it is only the first in a series of updates that will help bridge the gap between Dawntrail and Evercold. These updates will wrap up many of the storylines from Dawntrail, including the Echoes of Vana’diel Final Fantasy 11 crossover raid, Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures, the Occult Crescent, and, of course, the Main Scenario. The FF14 Patch 7.5 MSQ, which acts as both epilogue to Dawntrail and prologue to Evercold, is divided into two parts: the first half, available in-game now, and the second half, arriving with the final part on September 8.

  • Patch 7.5 (Live now): Main Scenario part 1, Echoes of Vana’diel conclusion
  • Patch 7.51 (June 2): Auxesia Cosmic Exploration Star, Tiisol Ja Custom Deliveries, Dancing Mad (Ultimate)
  • Patch 7.55 (July 28): Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures, Occult Crescent: North Horn
  • Patch 7.56 (September 8): Main Scenario part 2, Beastmaster Limited Job

Evercold, also known as the 8.0 update, is beginning a new chapter of Final Fantasy 14 called The Godless Realms Saga. This multi-expansion narrative will explore the world of Final Fantasy 14 and its reflections in a world without Zodiark or Hydaelyn, all while trying to avert a mysterious, frigid fate from claiming the star.

All the details as to how and why the Warrior of Light will be going to the Fourth Reflection in Evercold are not yet known, though the first part of the MSQ that arrived with Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.5 on April 28 provides some very interesting clues. Fans will have to wait until next January to see exactly how it all plays out, but the next two Fan Festivals on July 25 and October 31, plus the second part of the MSQ, will hopefully fill in some of the blanks to tide players over until then.

Adapting Gameplay Systems For a New Saga of Final Fantasy 14

Evolving Final Fantasy 14’s Jobs and Combat

Beyond the story, Final Fantasy 14 is making some gameplay adjustments during Patch 7.5 to prepare it for Evercold as well. One of the most fundamental ways it does so is through job balance. FF14 Patch 7.5 buffed actions for several jobs, including Warrior, Samurai, Reaper, Viper, Summoner, and Sage. While this is far from rare for a major update, the upcoming job action changes in Evercold make this particularly noteworthy.

In 8.0, every existing job will have two different job action input styles to choose from: Reborn and Evolved. Evolved utilizes a completely new job design philosophy based on fewer buttons, dynamic abilities based on target and distance, and ease of use while maintaining complexity. Meanwhile, Reborn will stick closer to the iconic combat styles fans have used before Evercold. This means class balance changes implemented during 7.5 will almost certainly influence how the Reborn job action system works, and will likely help close the gap between it and the upcoming Final Fantasy 14: Evercold job reworks.

Getting More Final Fantasy 14 Players Playing Together

Another huge change that arrived in 7.5 is the inclusion of the award-winning Shadowbringers expansion into the free trial for Final Fantasy 14. New fans can now enjoy all of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers with no purchase necessary. This also means players can use all jobs except Reaper, Sage, Viper, and Pictomancer, and can play every race except for male Viera and female Hrothgar. With access to what is widely regarded as the best expansion in Final Fantasy 14, and one of the best stories in Final Fantasy overall, even more gamers will likely get hooked on the critically acclaimed MMORPG ahead of Evercold.

Speaking of reaching new players, Final Fantasy 14 is also coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 before 8.0, meaning Evercold will be the first expansion release on the Nintendo console. The platform release is planned for August 2026 after a brief early access period, meaning fans should be able to play Final Fantasy 14 Patch 7.56’s Main Scenario on the Switch 2 if they want.

Lastly, Final Fantasy 14 is rolling out Same-Region Player Matching, a system that lets gamers from different Data Centers within the same Region play with one another. This feature will not only help reduce queue times, but will also prevent players from needing to use FF14‘s Data Center Travel system to raid or use the Party Finder. This system will start stress tests in Japan during the 7.5x patch series, with the hope that it will expand to the NA, EU, and CN regions no later than Evercold’s launch.

Final Fantasy 14 8.0 is going to be a huge expansion—so huge, in fact, that the PlayStation 4 will be unable to handle the expansion’s file size by Patch 8.2 or 8.3, meaning some players will need to upgrade to a PS5 before too long. Beyond the literal file size, however, Evercold may be one of FF14‘s most important, make-or-break releases since Endwalker. Players still have to wait out the rest of the year before 8.0 arrives, but with these updates, conventions, and platform releases between then and now, time will fly faster than one might expect.
