If You Want to Play Wolverine, You Probably Have to Buy a PS5

If You Want to Play Wolverine, You Probably Have to Buy a PS5

Well-known industry insiderJason Schreier claims he’s getting the sense that Sony may be pulling back from putting first-party PlayStation 5 games on PC. More specifically, Schreier says that upcoming single-player exclusives like Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine might not come to PC after their initial launch on PS5.

Over the past five years, Sony has ported many of its modern first-party games to PC, often heading to the platform many months after their debut on PlayStation 5. Horizon Zero Dawn was the first PlayStation exclusive to come to PC in 2020, and since then, fans have seen God of War, Spider-Man, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and more come to Steam. The reception to these PlayStation PC ports has been somewhat mixed, however, due to multiple of them suffering from severe technical issues at launch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Has More Exclusive Games Than PS5, Xbox Series X Combined

Despite being available for a fraction of the time, the Nintendo Switch 2 console has already released more exclusives than the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Rumor: Marvel’s Wolverine Might Not Be Coming to PC

During the February 26 episode of the gaming podcast Triple Click, former Kotaku writer and current Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier commented on the possible future of Sony first-party games coming to PC. Schreier said, “the sense I’m getting is that they’re backing away from putting their exclusive console stuff, like traditional single-player stuff, on PC.” Triple Click co-host Kirk Hamilton then asked Schreier if he thinks the next Ghost of Tsushima will only be available on PlayStation, to which Schrier replied “I do.”

Jason Schreier then used the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine as an example, saying that it’s only currently confirmed to release on PlayStation 5. Hamilton then asked Schreier if he thinks Wolverine will ever come to PC, to which he said he “wouldn’t be surprised if it never came to PC,” and that fans will likely “need a PlayStation to play it, at least for the indefinite future.”

As to why Sony could potentially be stopping its PC ports in the near future, Schreier says that he doesn’t “think it was that successful in the first place…it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be that big of a blow.” While the days of single-player PlayStation exclusives on PC may be numbered, Schreier does state that he believes live-service first-party games will still come to PC. A handful of multiplayer Sony games are already confirmed to be heading to PS5 and PC simultaneously when they eventually launch, such as 4:Loop and Horizon Hunters Gathering.

Shortly after the Triple Click episode aired, Jason Schreier’s claims were discussed in a ResetEra thread. Some commenters fought back against Schreier’s claims, stating that Death Stranding 2 was confirmed for PC just a few months after launch and that the recently announced Kena: Scars of Kosmora is heading to PC day-and-date — two recent decisions that seemingly don’t align with the idea that Sony is moving away from putting its games on PC. An hour after the thread went live, Jason Schreier replied to the comments, thanking fans for listening to the podcast episode and saying that his claims are “not speculation, but sometimes topics come up on the show before I’m quite ready to publish a story about them. More to come soon I’m sure.”

The original poster of the ResetEra thread, Smitch, also highlighted a recent Digital Foundry Q+A video from February 24 in which the subject of PlayStation PC ports was addressed. At around the 24-minute mark, John Linneman is asked whether he thinks PlayStation will lean more into PC releases in the future. Linneman seemingly shares similar sentiments to Jason Schrier, replying with:

“I actually have an inkling that they’re pulling away from PC. Watch this space…Based on some of the decisions and the way things have been going lately, I get the feeling that under the current leadership, PC has become less important…I’m not confident they have a huge vision for PC going forward.”
