June 2 is Officially the End of an Era For Marathon

June 2 is Officially the End of an Era For Marathon

While there was plenty of concern about Marathon support being cut soon after launch, especially after Sony revealed the massive impairment loss taken on Bungie, fans can rest assured that the game will continue to be expanded for the time being. How long Marathon has is anyone’s guess — just Season 2, the remainder of 2026 and up through Season 3, or long-term support are all valid theories as of now — but the good news for players is that they can look forward to a new batch of content on June 2. And, in addition to this, a fresh start via Marathon’s first vault wipe.

Those familiar with the extraction shooter will be aware of wipes, which see players losing access to all the upgrades and gear they’ve been grinding for over a certain period of time. Some games, like the hugely popular Arc Raiders, make wipes optional, but Marathon’s wipe is expected to be mandatory. Unless plans have changed behind the scenes, come June 2, all players will be on a level playing field, ensuring fair games for the first several weeks as players get used to new content like a nighttime version of Dire Marsh. How exactly this wipe is received remains to be seen, but it will undoubtedly feel like a new era for Marathon once it takes place.

Bungie plans to reveal more details on Marathon Season 2 closer to its June 2 launch, but in addition to the night variant of Dire Marsh, a new Runner Shell called the Sentinel and a mechanic called The Cradle will be introduced.

I’m Officially Sick of Live Service Games, But Not For the Reason You Think

Live service titles are a common source of criticism from many gamers nowadays, but I have two very different problems than most seem to.

Marathon’s Reset Could Have a Huge Impact, One Way or Another

Extraction shooter resets are a hot topic, with the idea seeming particularly offensive to those who don’t play the games themselves. After all, players being asked to give up all the upgrades they’ve worked so hard to acquire is a big ask, and practically demands a great gameplay loop that has everyone willing to upgrade their characters once again. Fortunately, while Marathon’s player base isn’t as big as Sony and Bungie may have hoped for, it is passionate, and these existing fans will likely stay on board after the reset. Though it may be understandable to fear what the reset could do, as potentially pushing away the players Marathon currently has would be disastrous, there’s a good chance it’s a net positive for the game instead.

Beyond just putting players on equal footing and ending the reigns of terror carried out by squads with purple and yellow shields, a reset allows Bungie to shake up the upgrade loop for Marathon. New contracts could send players to different locations, creating conflicts on parts of the maps that normally get forgotten about, while also progressing the game’s narrative and allowing Marathon’s stacked voice cast to shine. Different upgrades could see the Marathon community chasing new resources, while also improving their Runners in different ways. In Season 2, perhaps Marathon’s Rooks won’t be upgraded via Capstones, but the free kit in the Armory instead. Essentially, the Marathon reset could introduce a brand-new grind on top of creating a jumping-on point for casuals and newcomers, with Bungie implementing feedback from the first Season.

Marathon’s Next Few Weeks Are Going to Be Hectic

With the end date in sight for Marathon’s first Season, anyone who has felt the game has been super challenging as of late is in for a real wake-up call. Players will have all their loot taken away from them in just a few weeks, so they’ll undoubtedly be using it now. Rare weapons, Cryo Vault keys, and valuable backpacks could soon be found across every map, though obtaining them won’t be easy. It seems like Bungie is aware of this, as from May 21 to the new Season’s start date of June 2, Cryo Archive will be live. This creates the ideal playground for gamers to spend all their hard-earned gear before the reset, truly making the map the “lose everything factory” that all the memes have labeled it. To give casuals a fighting chance, a free blue kit can be grabbed from the Armory each day.

On June 2, a new era for Marathon begins, as players will only have access to their earned cosmetics, codex lore, and titles. Marathon’s Factions will need to be progressed again, green gear will no longer be scoffed at, and a host of new tasks can be expected. Perhaps the naysayers are proven right, and the reset will frustrate those who played a ton. Alternatively, with the positive word of mouth around the game from those who actually played it (Marathon’s reviews are quite glowing), the reset providing a new beginning could be just what’s needed to get some fence sitters on board. Time will tell, but until that point, there will be even more risks and rewards to be found on Tau Ceti IV.
