Their brilliant build has consequently been making the rounds on social media, underscoring the lasting appeal of J.R.R. Tolkien’s worldbuilding among LEGO fans.
The Lord of the Rings has become a particularly popular theme among custom builders, partly due to the sheer variety of its setting, which incorporates everything from serene Elven settlements to scenes of severe carnage spanning battlefields big and small. Recent fan creations in the niche include a variety of fantasy displays, as well as a massive LEGO rendition of former Gondor capital Osgiliath by one particularly inspired LOTR fan.

LEGO Lord of the Rings Moria MOC Recreates The Chamber Of Mazarbul
The Osgiliath MOC, the fan term for “My Own Creation,” has now received some timely competition from a multifaceted Moria project by Reddit user Grinch_AFOLsWelcome, who shared it on r/lego in mid-June 2026. The adult fan of LEGO—or “AFOL,” as reflected in their username—came up with the design for Brickworld Chicago, an upcoming convention taking place on June 20 and 21. Their display recreates the Fellowship’s stand in the Chamber of Mazarbul from the first Lord of the Rings novel, featuring Balin’s Tomb at the center, Orcs pressing in from multiple openings, and an imposing cave troll serving as the single biggest visual threat in the chaos.
New Moria MOC Borrows from 14-Year-Old LEGO LOTR Set
The cave troll appears to be a notable carryover from LEGO’s official The Lord of the Rings line, with the new fan build seemingly using the large figure from 9473 The Mines of Moria. That is a 776-piece set originally launched in May 2012 and retired in November 2013. 14 years later, 9473 remains the Danish toymaker’s only commercialized brick miniature based on Middle-earth’s mythical Dwarven homeland, an enormous subterranean realm tying back to much of Tolkien’s elaborate Lord of the Rings lore.
The underground setting gives the MOC a strong sense of structure before the abundant minifigures become the focus. The builder used a restrained gray palette, layered columns, recessed walls, and broken masonry to make the room feel heavy and ancient. The end result may not be the first LEGO LOTR build to capture the Dwarven grandeur as Tolkien described it in his famous writings, but it is a rare custom design that feels authentic without relying on sheer scale. Exactly how restrained it is remains unclear, as Grinch_AFOLsWelcome did not share an estimate for the size of their Moria MOC.

The brick-built Chamber of Mazarbul replica arrives during an already memorable period for fans of LEGO and Lord of the Rings alike. That is due in large part to the recent reveal of 11377 Minas Tirith, a decidedly imposing recreation of Gondor’s capital. Featuring 8,278 pieces, the model ranks as the seventh-largest LEGO set of all time, or sixth among those already released. The massive miniature officially launched in early June 2026 and went out of stock in the U.S. almost immediately, despite its $649.99 price tag.
